The Reality Behind Keeping Monkeys as Pets
The Reality Behind Keeping Monkeys as Pets

The majority of people, when they look at a baby monkey, see an enticing, big-eyed, fluffy thing that is in need of love. This is a kind of creature that cannot possible be dangerous to anyone. It is believed that around 11,200 monkeys are kept as pets in the United Kingdom, despite the fact that the reality of the situation is somewhat different.

The number is considerably higher in the United States of America, where it is estimated that 15,000 primates are kept as pets. It is possible to buy several species online, from capuchins to chimpanzees. Even gibbons, lemurs, and Diana monkeys, which are all considered endangered species, are available for purchase.

Taking in a newborn monkey is a major commitment that many are not suited for. The average lifespan of a monkey is between 20 and 40 years, and they demand a significant amount of room and physical activity. The cost of housing and feeding a monkey may be rather high, and once the initial excitement of having a monkey wears off, it can be very challenging to find a new home for one.

They are still a wild animal
When it comes to keeping any kind of primate as a pet, one of the most significant challenges is the fact that they are still wild animals. Primates, in contrast to cats and dogs, have not been allowed to become domesticated, and as a result, their instincts will eventually take over. When primates reach maturity, they frequently become erratic and hostile toward other living things. Depriving any animal from their natural way of life, especially removing their natural social bonds with their own species is very likely to produce behavioural issues and neuroses. Monkey Videos on human owners are not rare; monkeys are notorious for biting and scratching. People who have maintained larger primates, such as chimps, have even lost their lives.

Despite all the challenges with keeping a primate as a pet many people can’t resist the thought of having their own live toy that resembles a youngster. Many people in fact openly claim they maintain a monkey as pet since they don’t have children and the monkey fills that void in their lives. I have some sympathy for these people who are pushed to this by loneliness. However, it doesn’t excuse putting another animal through a life of agony.

Primates should never be kept as pets; they are social intelligent animals and should be in their native environment with their own species or at least in an enclosure that replicates their natural setting. The pet trade is subsidizing the breeding of primates in captivity and the unlawful capture of wild species. Governments need to establish stricter limits on keeping primates as pets in order to keep this under control before more people are wounded and more primates are put through this treatment.
