10 Healthy Car Key Repair Habits
Why Your Car Key May Not Turn

There are many possible reasons for why your key won't turn. Some fixes are easy, while others require more technical knowledge or professional help.

AutoZone associates can replace the majority of traditional keys that don't contain chips by choosing an identical key blank and using machines to replicate the contours of your existing key. This service usually takes only minutes.

Ignition Socket

Sometimes, a car's key will be inoperable at the most inconvenient times, for instance, when you're putting groceries into your trunk, on the way to the gym or home after a long day. If the issue is caused by a deadlock or your key fob, it's generally easy to repair. This could help you avoid having to buy a new vehicle.

The first step is replacing the battery in your key fob if it's not keeping a charge. This can often fix the issue particularly if you've had it for a while and has been tossed around a lot. If you're still experiencing issues, a quick visit to your local AutoZone may be able to assist.

Transponder chips can be found inside the head of plastic on your key if you own an older model vehicle. Designed to be a more effective anti-theft device the chips emit a unique code when your key is put into the ignition. The signal is then read and interpreted by the "immobilizer" which either starts and accepts the engine of your vehicle or blocks it from starting.

Depending on your specific car depending on the model, you might be able to reset the chip on your own by following the instructions in the owner's manual. It may involve opening and closing doors, turning on and off lights or electronics and pressing a series of buttons in a certain sequence. If you're not able to do this yourself, it's important to note that most locksmiths and manufacturers are able to reprogram these keys for a fee. Some car dealerships will also perform this, however they may require proof of ownership and a deposit.

Cylinder

The cylinder is one of the most fundamental 3D shapes in geometry. It's a shape with two circular bases joined by a curved surface at an exact distance from the center, called the height of the cylinder. Toilet paper rolls and cans of cold drinks and LPG gas tanks are just a few examples of cylinders. The cylinder is also found in a variety of car engine parts.

It is also possible to replace the cylinder in case your key is damaged. This is a relatively inexpensive fix that you can usually do yourself. If you are skilled with a toolbox, you can buy a new ignition lock at the local auto parts store and then replace it in accordance with the directions in the owner's manual. It's not always an easy process and it's usually better to let a professional handle it for you.

If your car keys won't start the engine or turn on the ignition it could be an issue with the cylinder or battery. The battery change on your key fob is one of the first things to try, and it could fix the problem. Your key fob will be used a lot and bumped around, which means it could need to be cleaned and reprogrammed.

This is usually handled by a locksmith or your car dealership, depending on the model of car you own. If you have an older model, it's worth trying a local hardware store that is specialized in keys for automotive locks. A hardware store will typically cut the standard car key and supply an extra key, whereas the dealer will require the VIN number of your vehicle or evidence of ownership in order to make an alternative.

Gear Selector

Over time, keys can become damaged over time. They are tossed around in pockets, purses and drawers, and they could even be bent in a difficult-to-access location. It is important to check the grooves on your key regularly to ensure that they are well-maintained and clean. If they aren't the grooves of the key will eventually wear out and make it difficult to insert and remove the key.

There are several options you can use to get your key off the ignition. Try using a spare key to determine if the problem lies with the the ignition switch. Then, move the key in and out of the ignition to allow it to align properly with the internal components.

broken key repair inside the ignition cylinder could be caused by misaligned small tumblers in the cylinder. This can cause the pins to not drop properly, which prevents the key from being inserted or removed successfully. Using a lock lubricant specifically designed for locks or graphite powder may assist in re-aligning the tumblers so that the key can easily come out of the ignition.

Some people suggest tapping the end of the ignition key with the hammer of a small size. This can damage the cylinder that controls the ignition and the key. You can use a tack hammer instead of an hammer, but do not hit it too hard.

If you've tried all of these methods but you're still unable to remove your car key, it may be time to consult a professional. A locksmith or mechanic who is certified can safely remove the ignition and retrieve your key.

Battery

The car key fob is an excellent tool that allows you to lock and unlock your car. However, it will eventually go out of service, just like everything else powered by batteries. You can replace the batteries yourself and your key fob will be like new.

The first step is to find the right battery. The best way to begin is by reading the owner's manual, or speaking with locksmiths about the kind of battery your vehicle utilizes. Then, purchase a compatible replacement at the local hardware store or auto parts retailer. It is also possible to disassemble your key fob to locate the battery slot. It is essential to use a soft tool, such as a fingernail, or screwdriver to force the fob open without damaging the internals.

The battery should be inserted carefully into the slot once you have opened the keyfob. Make sure that the positive and negative sides of the batteries are in sync. Otherwise the battery won't be able to charge properly. Once the battery is installed, close the key fob and snap it back together.

Press the button on your new key and point it towards the car. If everything is working just as it should then it's time to get in and take a look at your newly restored car key. You'll soon be a pro in replacing the car key battery. Good luck! Check out our blog for more advice on how you can repair your vehicle yourself. Bent Key

The last thing you'd wish to happen to your car key is for it to become bent inside the lock, or even worse, to become stuck inside. Fortunately, this type of key is usually repaired. If the key is stuck too far and cannot be removed by normal twisting, the only option is to replace it.

Generally speaking, the issue with a key getting stuck in the ignition is the fact that it has become overly worn and is not engaging the lock wafers properly. It may be a sign that you must replace the ignition cylinder, or just get a new key.

If the key can still be inserted into the cylinder and turned, but isn't aligned properly, you'll have to flatten it out with a hammer. Use a soft-faced, non-damaging hammer to avoid damaging the lock cylinder or key. You could also use the flat end on pliers with needle-nosed tips to bend the key back into alignment. It may require a few tries to bring the key back into alignment.

If the key is unable to be removed from the ignition cylinder, it is a sign that the teeth have become overly worn and aren't connecting the wafers in the lock properly. If this is the case, a replacement key will be needed as soon as is possible. This can be done by taking the key stub to the dealer where you bought your car, and request a VIN cut key that is exactly same as your old one. This is a lot easier and less expensive than trying to use your current key to get back in shape.
