How to Fix a Key Fob That isn't Working
If your key fob isn't functioning, a few easy steps can fix it. First, ensure that it's not the backup remote.
If your backup remote is unable to lock and unlock the doors of your car, it is likely that the primary remote isn't functioning. Most car remote key failures are caused by circuitry or battery issues.
Battery
The battery in the key fob could be worn out over time. It is simple to replace batteries. However it is essential that you choose the right type. You can consult your owner's manual or call the manufacturer to inquire about the right kind. It is also a good idea to examine the battery compartment with care because dead batteries can leak caustic chemicals that can harm the remote. If changing the batteries does not solve the issue it could be that there are other issues that require professional attention. If buttons are stuck or broken, for example it might be necessary to take the remote apart and rework each component. You could also try reprogramming the vehicle to recognize the new remote.
Buttons
Due to repeated use, key fobs may wear out and become dirty. It is not unusual for buttons to cease working, or to require a hefty push to make them work. This can be a hassle particularly when you're away from home and have to turn on your car. Fortunately, even worn-out or broken buttons can usually be fixed with a bit of time and some of the materials you might already have in the house.
First, check that the batteries are charged correctly and that the indentation on the back of the button is filled. Then, carefully remove the remote and look at the circuit board. Check for signs of corrosion or other indications that the buttons are worn or damaged, like missing paint that is conductive. Use a Q-tip dipped into rubbing alcohol to gently clean any membrane contact that has become worn-out or where conductive paint is missing. Do not rub too vigorously in order to damage the conductive paint and prevent the button from firing when pressed.
Also, be sure to check the battery connector's terminals for an unattached solder connection. If this is the case, simply connecting them back can restore functionality to the button. The same process can be used to restore function to any other loose connections in the fob.
If, for instance, any of the buttons made of rubber that are on the front of the key fob aren't working or require a hard press to work, it is likely that the graphite disks that are on the back of the button are wearing down and require replacement. This is usually done by rubbing a pencil across the disks. This should bring the button back to working.
If none of these solutions work, or if you still are unable to get the button to respond when you press it hard, it could be that the circuitry is failing. nearby key repair shop g28carkeys.co.uk is possible to fix this by cleaning and re-soldering the fob, but you should have another spare in case it doesn't work.
Circuitry
Whether or not the key fob buttons function the circuit board that is inside your remote may be dirty. The issue can be solved by a thorough inspection. Broken and damaged cases are the most frequent causes of boards that are dirty. A damaged case can allow water and other debris to get in and short circuit the electronic components. Water can also eat through pins and vias, which are small connectors on the board.
If you're skilled enough to open your key fob, and you don't mind making an mess, you can remove the buttons from their sockets and then solder new ones. It's also worth examining the battery terminal connections. They can get very dirty and if they're loose, the buttons might not work or even stay in their down position. Soldering the terminals and buttons into place is usually enough to return a malfunctioning fob to working.
Non-Remote Transponder Chips
Sealed non-remote transponder chips are more durable than the remote fobs that contain them but they can still be damaged by a hole that is drilled into them or run over by a lawnmowers or door handle for a car. The failure of the fuse is usually the cause of non-remote chip failures.
If you're handy enough to remove a key fob that is sealed and are able to bear the mess, you can take off the circuit board and examine the fuse using an instrument to verify diode function. If you're not comfortable doing this, go to your local hardware store or Oreilly's and they'll usually have a RFID frequency tester that can tell you whether the key fob sending a signal.
Programming
Key fobs take many abuses and aren't indestructible. They can lose their pairing with the receiver inside your vehicle due to shocks or low battery, which calls for changing the program. A professional auto locksmith or the main dealer can reprogram the keyfob and get it working again. In the event that resetting and fixing your key fob fails, it could be time to replace it entirely.
