Buying a Tandem Double Buggy
If you have twins or children very similar in age, a tandem double buggy is a fantastic option. They're narrower than side-by-side buggies and are ideal for maneuvering tight spaces such as entrances, on public transportation and on rocky terrain.
Some transform into travel systems that take 2 carrycots or car seats. They are typically heavier, longer and less stable than a single pushchair.
Convertible
Whether you're looking for a convertible stroller that converts from single to double or to add a second seat to an existing one, there's several options available. The UPPAbaby V2 is a spacious, gorgeous stroller. It can easily be transformed from a single stroller to a dual by adding the rumble seat. It's costly and less maneuverable than other dual strollers because the 2nd seat is placed to the left of the front seat. Nuna Demi Grow offers a similar option, but it lacks storage under the seat when it is used as a double stroller.
Other options include all-terrain twin buggies, as well as fixed-wheel joggers that can accommodate two children. They tend to be more expensive, however they're designed to last longer on rough terrain, and may have more resale value.
Independent seat recline
If you're looking for a double buggy to transport children of various ages, you'll need a buggy that has an recline that is independent for both seats. This will allow your child's older to sit back and relax while the baby sleeps in the bassinet and the reverse.
Think about the width of your stroller, as this will determine how easy it is for you to navigate through doors and on public transportation. If you have extremely narrow doorways then it might be a good idea to consider a side-byside pushchair, such as the Mountain Buggy Duet which has the advantage of having a footprint that is similar to a single buggy, however it can accommodate two seats and car seat adaptors.
Tandem buggies are typically longer than side by side models, making them more difficult to maneuver around and down kerbs. However they can also accommodate a wider range of combinations of car seats/car seats/seats and are an excellent choice for twins and siblings of various ages. They can also be more expensive than single-to double buggies, but are a worthwhile purchase if you plan to keep it for many years and will have a decent amount of resale value if you decide to sell it off when your children have grown out of it.
This feature will allow you to place your child in a comfortable position for naps and observation. This is especially important when you have a young child in the rear seat who may want to lie back and take a snooze while the older child wants to sit and observe their surroundings.
Some brands have a unique design that allows the back of their vehicles to recline fully into a position that is almost flat, perfect for newborns. For instance the iCandy Orange has raised stadium-style seating that can recline both the toddler seat included as well as the optional RumbleSeat to multiple positions, so that your children have a the option of where they want to sit as well as providing an excellent UPF 50+ canopy that has windows that can be seen from afar.
More spacious than twin buggies
You don't need to have twins to benefit from a bigger double buggy. They're great for siblings of different ages and allow you to go about your day without worrying about your children touching each other. They're typically a bit longer too with one seat positioned behind the other, and typically with a fully-flat recline option for newborns (or an upright position for toddlers).
Mountain Buggy Duet is a popular choice. It is the tiniest design that is side-by-side and a footprint that is comparable to the footprint of a single stroller. It features an adjustable handle that makes it easier for parents to push and a handbrake that is helpful on steep hills. It is suitable to use from birth and it can be combined with a range of car seats and carrycots.
The iCandy Wave is another option. It folds in mono or duo mode with just one click. The clever frame expands in width to accommodate an additional chair and can be used with up to two car seats or carrycots. This makes it a great choice for older siblings that want to be seated together. It's slightly longer than other models, but it isn't heavy and has a soft suspension for curbs.
There are plenty of 3-wheeler tandems with inline wheels that provide stability and fast steering. Take a look at Phil and Teds inline models, or iCandy Peach and Pear buggies. They are often folded into a single buggy if you have limited space at home, or need to carry it from the car to the bus stop.
It's important to keep in mind that a wide double buggy will be heavier and bulkier than a smaller single buggy Make sure that you're getting what you need before you purchase. It will be used on trains, buses and subways often, so it should be easy to manage and use. You may also need to juggle it onto and off the car seat while taking your children to nursery or school so you'll need to be aware it can be easily manoeuvred in small spaces.
From birth
You'll need a pushchair for your entire family, whether you're expecting twins or you have a second child after you've had your first. Double buggies are typically heavier, bulkier, and more expensive than single strollers. However they are much more maneuverable in tighter doors, or around obstacles like curbs. Many double buggies are compatible with piggyback boards (available from the manufacturer or as an add-on). This allows you to transport three children at once.
Tandem pushchairs put one child in front the other. They are a good option for children who are close in age and are able to get along. They're not foolproof. Siblings who are sitting side-by-side could punch or kick one another, and children of different heights could argue over who sits higher. A tandem high-low model can solve this issue by elevating the seat at the rear, which will prevent your child's height from sitting on the bottom and not getting any view.
The iCandy Wave is a good choice for parents looking for a convertible double buggy with a carrycot that can fit both a newborn and an older child. It features a clever frame which can be expanded in size when you add a second child seat. It can also fold flat to make it a compact storage. The padded seats are comfortable, the straps are easy to fasten and the buckles some of the most impressive we've seen in any of our tests. You can recline both seats independently and the canopies are large and generous with UPF 50+ protection and windows that can be seen from a distance.
The only drawback to the iCandy tandem is that it is quite expensive. However, a quality tandem will last you for years and retain an attractive resale value so at the end of the day you'll likely recover some of the cost. It doesn't have the same range of seating configurations that some of our other top choices, but the iCandy is a good option for families who don't want to shell out a lot of money.
