How to Repair a Broken Window
Broken window glass can be caused by a storm or a child throwing an object. It could lead to further issues like leakage of water or a draft that increases the cost of energy.
Depending on the extent of the crack, there are many options to fix it. Here are some options to think about:
Tape
A bit of old-fashioned tape can be used to temporarily repair cracks in your windows. It's inexpensive, simple to use and works well. Make sure to cover both sides of the crack to ensure that it's as secure as you can. This will prevent air from coming in which can cause further damage to the glass and shatters inside the window. Clear tape is a great option as it looks better than duct tap and does not leave a sticky residue after removal.
You can also purchase specialized adhesive tape in most hardware stores. It comes in 2 x 30 feet lengths, and creates a patch that is not visible. This stops the crack or tear spreading. This is useful for window enclosures for boats RV or tent vinyl windows and even soft top car windows. It is easy to apply and requires no special tools or skills. Simply cut the proper size, then remove the release paper, and apply it. It is a saltwater and UV resistant and is made of a durable material which can withstand harsh environments. This can save you a lot of money by not needing to buy a complete window replacement.
Super Glue
Super glue can be used to repair chips or cracks in glass. These adhesives join with hydroxyl ions present on the glass's surface making a strong grip in seconds. Cyanoacrylate glues are great for attaching wood, metal and ceramic to glass as they are able to withstand moisture and high temperatures. If you're working with the size of a project it's a good idea to invest in silicone or epoxy for a stronger hold and faster drying time.
Before applying any kind of glue to a window that has been damaged, it's important to prepare the surface. It is important to get rid of all debris and ensure both surfaces are clean and dry. It could be beneficial to roughen up the surface a bit as well, especially if it's extremely smooth. A slight sanding will give the adhesive a bigger surface area to adhere to, resulting in stronger bonds.
When you're ready for the actual repairs, you need to choose a high-quality glue specifically designed for glass. This will ensure the glue is safe and won't leave undesirable marks or fingerprints. Choose a clear glue that will become transparent after it's dried. Avoid glues that expand after they dry, as this could cause cracks in glass.
You should also think about how the glass is going to be used. Super glue is suitable for glass that will be kept inside and will not be under much stress. If the glass is part of an windscreen, it's recommended to make use of a weatherproof adhesive.
Super glues typically take a couple of seconds to bond, but they can have different cure times. It is essential to read the instructions carefully as some require chemical accelerators to accelerate the drying process. It's also a good idea to work in a well-ventilated area and open all windows to improve the flow of air, which will help the glue to dry more quickly. Additionally you can make use of a fan to improve air flow around the work area, which will help the glue to dry more quickly.
Glass Repair Film
Glass repair film is an efficient and practical way to make windows that have cracked safe until they can be repaired professionally or replaced. It's easy and quick to install and can be done by anyone, not only a skilled tradesman. It costs much less than a traditional window board-up and will keep the heat in while keeping the rain out. It gives the appearance of a glass window and is perfect for hospitals, schools and offices.
If a window is damaged, the sharp shards that are left behind can cause serious injury and even death. Safety window films are made with a strong adhesive that reduce the risk of broken glass. They also secure the glass fragments in the film. The film is translucent, so light can still be able to pass through it and it is much more attractive than a boarding up - particularly in businesses that rely on the presence of customers at their premises.
The film is cut to size with knives or scissors. It is supplied with an easily peelable liner on the reverse that is printed with a grid that can be used to cut to size. It can be placed on either side of a windows. If window repair service is uneven it can be overlapping 10cm to add extra security.
There are various types of safety window films available in accordance with the kind of breakage. Gray safety film is recommended for star breaks, whereas amber safety films are ideal for bullseye breaks as well as other breaks with a lot of tiny cracks. Films should be applied to clean, wet glass. It is recommended that you make use of a polyethylene squeegee, and a soap solution. After the film has been glued to the glass it is recommended to allow it to cure for a few days.
This heavy duty self adhesive film is designed to strengthen and weatherproof damaged or broken glass until a permanent fix is able to be found. Eastman Films has years of experience in manufacturing safety and security window films. The film is available in 15 metre rolls, with 914mm of width and comes with a backing sheet and release liner.
Paint
When painting windows, it is important to do an excellent job. This will make the fresh coat of paint appear nice and ensure that it is able to stick well. Be sure to clean the windows and scrape away any loose paint or wood. It is also essential to take out all hardware such as handles and latches. You should also remove the sanding from the surface you are going to paint. This will give you a surface that is smooth so that the primer and paint will bond.
Cover the window's area by using painters' tape and plastic sheeting. This will prevent paint from accumulating on areas that aren't supposed to be painted. Green frog tape is the best to do this since it forms a clean line and is easy to remove. It is also recommended to use painters tape for any edges that are delicate that are affixed to the wall surfaces.
Once the window is secured it's time to begin the actual painting. You'll need to apply a few coats of primer, and let each one dry before proceeding. Once you've finished the primer, it's an excellent idea to give the entire surface an easy sanding using fine-grit sandpaper. This will smooth the surface for the next coat, and also remove any dust.
You'll need to wait until the primers made of oil or acrylic paints are completely dry before you can begin painting. Based on the type of paint that you are using, this process can take up to 24 hours.
It's time to begin painting after the primer and paint have dried. Paint the rails (horizontals first) before painting the stiles (verticals). This will help keep drips of paint from getting onto the glass. Also, make sure you keep a moist cloth on hand to wipe off any paint drips as quickly they happen.
