How to Do a Broken Car Key Repair
You're headed to work, in rush, and put your keys in the ignition. You try to turn the key however it locks. the lock.
There are a few things you can do to solve the issue before calling a professional locksmith. Here are some quick fixes:1. Super Glue.
1. Contact a locksmith
A damaged key in the lock is one of the most frustrating things a car owner could experience. This is especially frustrating if it occurs while the driver is trying to get to work or to drop off a child. In this case it is crucial to act quickly and attempt to free the stuck key.
Contacting a professional locksmith is the best choice, because they'll have the proper tools and know how to take out the broken keys without damaging the lock. Many people are looking for something small and stiff, such as a toothpick or paperclip. But it is not the best solution as they are too large to fit inside the lock.
The best solution is to use a pair tweezers. They are lightweight and are able to easily get into the lock. They should be strong enough to grab the broken part of a key, and then pull it out. If you don't own tweezers, it could be worth looking for a set that is available at auto parts stores. They are narrow and flat with hooks that are small enough to be inserted into the key hole and then grip on the broken piece of the key.
A magnetic key hook can be used to adhere to the metal of the lock and then pull it out. This is not always the best option as it can get caught under a lock and cause more damage. In such a scenario, it is best to contact an expert locksmith.
Some people attempt to join the two pieces of their snapped car key together using superglue, thinking that it will help them get it out of the lock. This can be dangerous because the pieces of metal could snag and break later. It is crucial not to turn the key as it could cause further damage to your lock or ignition cylinder. Call a professional locksmith to repair the broken key right away.
2. Drill through a hole
Sometimes, a key gets damaged inside the lock, and even if you have a spare, you might not be able to gain access to your vehicle. In these situations drilling the lock is the best option.
You will first want to ensure that the keyhole is positioned for a basic tumbler key. If it isn't, you won't be able to remove the pins without damaging the door, and possibly damaging the lock mechanism.
The next step is to know that you will be drilling through the outer plastic layer and an inner layer of metal. A small drill bit will suffice to get through these layers, but you must be sure to not go any deeper than that. In the event of drilling too deep, it could damage the internal wiring harness, or cause the drill to become stuck.
It is also recommended to wear a mask and protective gear when working with drilling. This will prevent dust and dirt from entering your respiratory system.
It is also a good idea, in the event that the key fragment is broken and remains stuck in the lock, to have a pair pliers and tweezers in your bag. If there is enough of the key sticking out to be grasped by tweezers, or pliers, this should suffice to pull it out of the lock. If not, however you'll need to use tools like this one to wedge the tool into the lock, and then turn it toward the key to grip and pull it out of the hole.
3. Drill a Nail
If you smash your car key in half, it could leave you stranded. There are fortunately several ways to fix it without having to pay for a locksmith. The first way is to utilize a screw or nail. These can be found in your home or at a hardware store. It is recommended to search for nails that are as thin and long as possible. This will allow you to fit it into the hole and then use epoxy to connect the two pieces together. Make sure that the back of the nails is flat. This will allow it to fit into the slot cut in the key. This will stop it from moving around and breaking in the future.
4. Super Glue
Many car owners resort to DIY techniques, such as using super glue, to fix a broken key. This is a risky practice. You could damage the lock, and then have to shell out more money for a replacement.
You must examine the broken keys first to ensure they are of the same size. This is vital to ensure that the pieces will be aligned properly and the key will fit into the lock once they have been bonded. Then, use a piece of fine-grit sandpaper or a metal file to smooth out the edges on the broken pieces of the key. repair car key will improve the bond of glue and decrease the chance of a key that is loose.
After you've polished the edges of the damaged key, apply a small amount super glue to one of the ends. Be careful not to use too much, as this could cause the key to become too thick and will have difficulty fitting into the lock. After lining up the two pieces of the broken key and pressing them together, you can press them. After a few minutes, the glue will begin to set and join the key fragments.
A bobby-pin or a paperclip can also be used as a tool to remove a broken key from the lock. They can be shaped like a pick and then inserted into the lock. This technique is particularly useful when the damage is located within or close to the keyway or ignition hole.
A car key that has been damaged with electronic components will need an entirely new key from the dealer or a professional locksmith. The key will need to be reprogrammed using a different code and the chip inside the key must be replaced. If, however, only the shell or metal portion of the key is damaged, it usually just requires the cutting of a new key and doesn't require replacement or reprogramming of the electronics.
