Car Key Button Repair
The buttons on keys for cars are exposed to a lot and are especially vulnerable if frequently used. This can lead to them becoming damaged over time.
Fortunately, there are several quick solutions to make your keys work again. These solutions are not completely safe, however. Making changes to batteries or tampering with the key fob could be risky. If you're not comfortable with these methods, it is recommended to seek advice from an expert auto-locksmith.
Change the Battery
If you notice that your key fob not working as it should, it might be time to replace the battery. remote car key repair can usually buy replacement batteries at any national chain drug store or the parts department of your car dealership. Some manufacturers include an extra battery with your car when you buy it.
The first thing you will need to find out which battery is used in your key fob. This information is typically available on the website of the manufacturer or by examining the key fob. The most commonly used battery that is used in a key fob is a button cell type similar to the ones used in remote controls and watches. These batteries are available at Walgreens, Energizer and other stores for less than $5 per pack of two.
If you are aware of the type of battery your key fob is using, you can remove it and take out the old battery. You can open most key fobs by using your fingers or a flat tool such as a screwdriver, at the seam or notch where they connect. Once the fob is opened, the battery will be able to pop out and you can then put in the new one with the same orientation as the old one. Most key fobs use CR2032 3V batteries, which are readily available at numerous retailers that sell AAA and AA batteries.
After the new battery has been installed after which you can snap the two parts of the key fob together and test it to make sure that all buttons function correctly. Pressing the lock and unlock buttons on the key fob while it is pointed at your vehicle will help determine whether or not everything is functioning exactly as it should. If your car is not responding to the key fob, it could be necessary to reprogram the key fob and establish an electronic connection between the two. This is a relatively easy process that requires a phone or other device.
Reprogram your key fob
If you're having issues with your key fob, and you think it needs a new one It may not be required to replace it. Instead the old battery might require reprogramming. This procedure varies for each vehicle, so your best bet is to consult the owner's manual (usually available in PDF format on the website of the automaker) or look on YouTube for videos that explain how to do this.
Most modern vehicles require a special procedure to put the vehicle into 'programming mode,' which typically involves engaging the power button on the driver's side door or ignition several times while pressing a button on the fob within a specific time period. This is how the fob transmits its digital identity code to the vehicle, and it stores it in its memory. After the fob is programmed, it will behave as an ordinary key.
Reprogramming a keyfob will erase any previous keyfobs. If you want to keep the other fobs following the first, they should be programmed quickly and with care.
There are a few replacement batteries for a car key fob at hardware stores, big-box retailers, or even online. However, you must be aware of the make and model of your car before buying a fob battery as the right type can be difficult to locate.

Dealers can be extremely helpful in this case, as they have the tools to reprogram the fob on a specific vehicle. Some European vehicles, such as those manufactured by Audi and BMW generally require a dealer to get this service since they utilize special security features that can only be reset by the manufacturer. Other dealers we spoke to such as those from Toyota and Lexus, were willing to reprogramme the fob in a replacement as provided you know the exact make and model of your car.
Replace the Button
If you have tried changing the battery and reprogramming the key fob but cannot start your car, it could be time to replace the button on your key. The button on your car key is subjected to a lot of pressure and jolting and may become stuck or damaged over time. Every time you press the button on your car key fob generates a unique code that is recognized by the car's receiver. If you try to operate your vehicle from a distance, it may not recognize you. It might close the doors or turn off the engine.
You can purchase replacement buttons online or in several local hardware stores. They are easy to install and open and require just a bit of clear plastic tape to cover the button.
Contact an Auto Locksmith
It's time to speak with a professional if you are experiencing problems with your car's key switch. Auto locksmiths are experts in the repair of electronic keys and locks. These specialists have the tools and know-how to diagnose and fix various issues with your key fob. This includes replacing batteries and changing the programming. They also have the skills and experience to handle more complicated jobs like fixing broken buttons or cutting a new replacement key.
The switch in the button for the car key is often worn out. Overuse and exposure to elements are the main causes. The switch is made from an extremely hard plastic with several switches on its surface. Each of these switches activates the function that you select with the key. As the switch ages over time, it becomes more difficult to turn on each of these functions. You will have to exert more pressure on the switch in order to activate it. This could further damage the switch and reduce its lifespan.
Replace the battery in your key fob. A lot of models of cars use lithium-ion button or coin batteries that you can buy at supermarkets, pharmacies and home improvement stores. Once you've replaced the battery your key fob should be working again.
If the issue persists it could be that the contacts in the key fob have worn out. The contacts are made of rubber and coated with an electric conducting film that can wear out over time. They are exposed to elements when you use the keypad, so they're constantly being exposed to moisture and dirt. Over time, they become worn to the point where they're no longer in contact with the circuit board or sensor underneath the keypad.
You can attempt to get the key fob replaced by visiting an auto dealer, but it can be costly and may take a long time. Another alternative is to contact a local car locksmith, who can repair your key fob and help you save money.
