How to Fix a Key Fob That isn't Working
If your key fob isn't functioning A few easy steps can fix it. The first step is to make sure it's not the backup remote.
If the backup remote is able to lock and unlock your car doors, then there is likely an issue with the main remote. Most car remote key failures are caused by circuitry or battery issues.
Battery
It is not unusual for the battery in a key fob for cars to wear out. mobile car key repair near me is simple to replace a battery. However, it is important that you use the correct kind. You can check the owner's manual or contact the manufacturer to find out the right kind. It is also important to check the battery compartment as batteries that are not working properly can release toxic chemicals that could damage the remote. If changing the batteries doesn't solve the issue it could be because there are other issues that require professional attention. If the buttons are stuck or broken, for example it might be necessary to disassemble the remote and rework each component. You could also try reprogramming the vehicle to recognize the new device.
Buttons
Key fobs can get dirty and worn out from frequent use. This is not uncommon however it can cause buttons to cease working or require a difficult press to get them to function. This can be a hassle particularly when you're away from home and have to start your car. Even worn-out or malfunctioning buttons are often fixable with a bit of time and materials you already have at home.
First, make sure that the batteries have been correctly inserted and that the indentation on the back of the button has been filled. Then, carefully open up the remote and examine the circuit board. Check for signs of corrosion or other indications that buttons are worn out or damaged, like missing paint that is conductive. Then, using a Q-tip that has been dipped in alcohol, gently clean any membrane contacts that have become damaged or where conductive paint is missing. Be careful not to rub too hard, because this could damage the conductive painting and prevent the button firing when the button is pressed.
Also, make sure to inspect the battery connector terminals for an unattached solder connection. If this is the case, simply reconnecting them may restore functionality to the button. You can follow the same procedure to restore functionality to any other loose connection inside the fob.
In the end, if any of the buttons made of rubber that are on the front of the key fob stop working or require a hard press to work it is likely the graphite disks that are on the back of the button are wearing down and need to be replaced. This can usually be done by rubbing a pencil on the disks, which will bring the button back to working.
If all of this doesn't help or if the button doesn't respond to a hard push It could be that the circuit board is damaged. This can sometimes be repaired by a quick clean, and replacing the solder, but it is best to have an extra fob in case this method fails for you.
Circuitry
The circuit board in the remote control could be dirty, regardless of whether the buttons on the key fob function or not. This problem can be resolved through a thorough examination. The most common causes of dirty circuit boards is water and broken cases. A damaged case allows water and other debris to pass through and short circuit the electronics. Water can also damage pins and connectors on the board called via's.
If you are handy enough to open your key fob, and don't mind making an mess, you can remove the buttons from their sockets and solder in new ones. It's also worth checking the battery terminal connections. If they are loose, the buttons could not function or get stuck in their down position. Soldering terminals and buttons back to their original positions is often enough to bring a non-working fob to working.
Non-Remote Transponder Chips
The non-remote chips sealed in a sealed case are more durable than their remote fobs, but they can be cracked when a hole is made in them or in the event that a door handle of a car or lawnmower runs over them. Failures of the fuse are typically the cause of non-remote chip failures.
If you're able to open a key fob that is sealed and are able to bear the mess, you can take off the circuit board and examine the fuse with a multimeter for proper diode function. If you're not confident doing this, head to your local hardware store or the Oreilly's and they'll usually have a RF frequency tester that will let you know whether the key fob is transmitting a signal.
Programming
Key fobs endure lots of abuse and aren't completely indestructible. They can lose their pairing with the receiver inside your vehicle due to shocks or a low-battery, which requires reprogramming. A professional auto locksmith or dealer will be able to reprogram your key fob to get it back up and running. In the rarer case that resetting or repairing your key fob isn't working it may be time to replace it all over again.
