How to Fix a Key Fob That isn't Working
If your key fob doesn't work, a few easy steps can be taken to fix it. First, make sure that it's not the backup remote.
If the backup can lock and unlock your car doors then there is likely an issue with the primary remote. The most common causes for key malfunctions for car remotes are circuitry or battery issues.
Battery
The battery inside a key fob can get worn out over the course of time. It is relatively easy to replace batteries, but it is important to ensure that you use the right type that you can refer to the owner's manual or talk to the manufacturer's dealer to determine the type of battery you need. It's recommended to inspect the battery compartment thoroughly since dead batteries may leak harmful chemicals that can harm the remote. If changing the battery doesn't fix the issue, there may be other issues that require professional attention. For example, if buttons seem to be stuck or damaged, it may be necessary to take the remote apart and rebuild its components. You could also try reprogramming your car to recognize the new key fob.
Buttons
Key fobs can get dirty and worn out from repeated use. This is not uncommon however, it can cause buttons to stop functioning or require a hard press for them to function. This can be a huge hassle particularly if you're away from home and you need to start your car. Fortunately, even worn-out or broken buttons can usually be fixed with just a bit of time and some of the materials you may already have around the house.
First, make sure the batteries are charged correctly and that the indentation on the back of the button is filled. Open the remote carefully and look over the circuit board. Check for signs of rust or other indications that the buttons are damaged or worn. For instance the paint that conducts electricity could be missing. Utilizing the Q-tip, dipped in alcohol, gently clean any membrane contacts that have become damaged or where conductive paint is missing. Be how to repair car key lock not to rub too hard, because this could damage the conductive paint and block the button from firing when it is pressed.
Also, carefully check how to repair car key lock for any loose solder connections. Soldering them back into place will allow the button to function again if this is the situation. You can follow the same process to restore functionality to any other loose connection inside the fob.
Finally, if any of the buttons made of rubber that are on the front of the key fob aren't working or require a very difficult press to function it is likely that the graphite disks that are on the back of the button are wearing out and require replacement. This is usually done by rubbing a pencil across the disks, which should bring the button back to its original state.
If none of this is useful or if the button does not respond to a hard press It could be that the circuit board itself has become damaged. It is possible to fix the issue by cleaning and re-soldering your fob however, you should have a spare in case it doesn't work.
Circuitry
If the key fob buttons are working, the circuit board inside your remote may be dirty. The issue can be solved by a thorough inspection. The most frequent causes of dirty circuit boards is water and damaged cases. A damaged case could let water and other debris into the circuit board, which can cause it to short out. how to repair car key lock can also damage pins and small connectors on the board called via's.
If you're handy enough to remove your key fob, and you're not afraid of a little mess, we can take off the buttons and then solder new ones in their place. Also, you should check the connections between battery terminals. If they're loose, the buttons may not work or even become stuck in their down position. Soldering the terminals and buttons back into place is typically all that's required to return a non-working key fob to working condition.
Non-Remote Transponder Chips
Sealed non-remote transponder chips are more durable than the remote fobs that have them but they can still be cracked by a hole that is drilled into them or over by a lawnmowers or door handle for a car. Fuse failures are usually the cause of non-remote chip failures.
If you're not confident opening the key fob, you may take the circuit board off and use a multimeter to verify that the diode is functioning properly. If you're not comfortable doing this, visit your local hardware store or the Oreilly's and they usually have an RF frequency tester that will tell you whether the key fob sending signals.
Programming
Key fobs aren't indestructible and are susceptible to being damaged by a lot of things. They may lose their connection with the receiver in your vehicle due to shocks or a low-battery, which requires changing the program. A professional auto locksmith, or main dealer, can reprogram your key fob and get it back up and running again. In the event that resetting and fixing your key fob fails, it could be time to replace it entirely.
