How to Repair a Broken Window
Broken windows can be the result of a storm or a child playing the ball. It could lead to more problems such as drafts or water seepage that can increase your energy bills.
There are several ways to repair the crack, based on the size of the crack. Here are some options to consider.
Tape
A good old-fashioned piece of tape can be a temporary solution to cracks in windows. It's easy to use, inexpensive and effective. Cover both sides of the cracked area to make it as secure as possible. This will reduce the amount of air that will be able to enter the window and cause damage to the glass or even shatter. Clear tape is a great option as it looks better than duct tap and doesn't leave sticky residue when removed.
You can also purchase special adhesive tape from most hardware stores. It is available in two x 30-foot lengths, and creates an invisible patch. This stops the crack or tear spreading. This is suitable for boat enclosure windows as well as tent or RV vinyl windows and soft top car windows. It's easy to use and requires no specialized tools or skills. Just cut the correct size, take off the release paper, and apply it. It is a saltwater and UV resistant and made from an extremely durable material that can withstand harsh conditions. This will save you a lot of money by keeping you from having to purchase a complete window replacement.
Super Glue
Super glue as a repair tool is a quick fix for small chips and cracks in glass. These adhesives join the hydroxyl ions of the glass surface, creating a strong hold in seconds. These glues can be used to bond ceramic, metal or wood to glass. They are resistant to extreme temperatures and moisture. If you're working with a large project, however it's a good idea to invest in silicone or epoxy for more sturdiness and faster drying time.
Before applying any type of glue to a window that has been damaged it is important to prepare the surface. You will want to remove all debris and make sure both surfaces are clean and dry. It is also an excellent idea to roughen the surface particularly if it's very smooth. A little sanding can give the adhesive more surface area to adhere to, resulting in a stronger bond.
When you're ready for the actual repairs, you need to select a good glue specifically designed for glass. This will ensure that the glue is safe and won't leave undesirable marks or fingerprints. If you can, opt for an adhesive that is clear, and will be transparent once it's dried. Avoid glues that expand when they dry, as this could cause cracks in glass.
It is also important to consider how the glass will be used. If it's intended to be kept in a closed space and not be subjected to excessive stress, then a basic super glue is sufficient. If the glass is part of the windscreen, it's a good idea make use of a weatherproof adhesive.
Super glues generally take couple of seconds to bond, but they can have different cure times. It's important to read the directions thoroughly as some require chemical accelerators in order to accelerate the drying process. It's recommended to work in a well-ventilated area and open all windows to improve air circulation, since this will allow the glue to dry faster. Additionally you can make use of a fan to improve the air flow around your work area, helping the glue to dry more quickly.
Glass Repair Film
Glass repair film can be a practical and cost-effective way to protect windows from damage when they are being repaired or replaced by experts. Anyone can put it in place even if they're not a skilled tradesman. It is easy to do and quick. It costs much less than a standard window glass board-up and keeps the rain out and heat in. It resembles glass windows and is perfect for hospitals, schools and offices.
When a window is cracked, the sharp shards that are left behind can cause serious injury or even death. Safety window films contain an adhesive that makes glass that has been broken much less hazardous, securing the shards within the film. The film is translucent, so light can penetrate it and it's less unsightly than board ups, especially for businesses that depend on their customers to visit their premises.
The film can be cut to size using knives or scissors. It comes with a peelable liner on its reverse that has a printed grid to assist in cutting to size. It can be placed on either side of the window and in the event of an uneven surface, it could be folded over by 10cm to provide extra security.
There are different types of safety window films available according to the kind of breakage. Gray safety films are suggested for star breaks, whereas amber safety films are ideal for bullseye breakages and other breaks that have lots of tiny cracks. The films must be applied to clean glass that is damp and it is recommended to use a polyethylene TAP squeegee using a soap solution to apply the film. Once the film has been stuck to the glass, it is recommended to allow it to set for a few days.
This high-quality self-adhesive film is designed to help stabilize and weatherproof damaged or broken glass until a permanent fix can be found. Eastman Films has years of experience in the production of safety and security window films. The film is supplied in 15 metre long, 914mm wide rolls, and comes complete with a backing paper and release liner.
Paint
When painting on the main page is important to do a thorough job. This will make the fresh coat of paint look nice and will also let it adhere properly. Be sure to clean the windows and scrape away any paint or wood that has escaped. It is also essential to remove all hardware like latches and handles. Finally, you will want to sand the area that will be painted. This will result in an area that is smooth so that the primer and paint will bond.
Protect the area around the window by using painters tape and plastic sheeting. This will make sure that you don't paint on things that aren't intended to be painted. I prefer using green frog tape to do this as it provides a crisp line and is easy to remove once the time arrives. Painters tape is a great idea for any delicate edges that are located near the walls.
Once the window is protected then it's time to begin the actual painting process. It is recommended to apply a few coats of primer and let each one dry before moving on to the next. After priming the area, you can lightly sand the entire surface fine-grit sandpaper. This will smooth the surface for the next coat and eliminate any dust.
You'll have to wait until the oil-based or acrylic primers or paints have completely dried before you start painting. This could take up to one day, based on the brand that you are using.
It's time to start painting after the primer and paint have dried. It is best to work from the inside out, painting rails (horizontals) before stiles (verticals). This will help to stop drips from getting on the glass. Keep a moist cloth on hand to wipe off any paint drips immediately.
