The majority of robotic vacuums require maintenance, such as emptying (and occasionally rinsing) the bin and wiping cameras and sensors. Also, they have to be connected to a power source. Many come with smartphone applications for scheduling, adjusting setting and more.

The iRobot Roomba 980 is the most recent in the series of top-of-the-line robot vacuum cleaners that are a staple of every modern household. This model is equipped with a HEPA-filter to help those who are allergic. It also comes with an extremely powerful battery that can clean for two hours before returning to its dock automatically once the bin is full.

It also comes with a feature called smart mapping which uses multiple sensors to help it identify the areas of your home that require attention and then create a clean path around them. This technology is extremely effective at navigating around toys that have been left on the floor or furniture legs sticking out from underneath objects. It also has a camera that can snap the Roomba back to reality when it begins to drift away from its original location.

iRobot has also added a new set of rollers under the bottom of the Roomba that don't have bristles and therefore tend to resist tangles better than previous models. These rollers are also taller and can be tucked under low couches or beds. They're designed to make this model more maneuverable on different floor types.

The Roomba 980 is distinguished from other high-end models by its new dirt detection feature, which uses cameras to identify dirt that has been embedded. This is a significant improvement over the previous version that relied on an algorithm that was driven by sensors to bounce around the room and clean the area three times, at different angles.


In our tests of its performance it was found that the Roomba 980 did well on carpets and hard flooring. It scored highly on carpets with low pile and on mid-pile. It did a fair job of removing pet hair, but it struggled with very long and thick pet fur that was stuck together.

The Roomba 980 is still one of the top performing robots in our list despite the slight limitations. It's also not as expensive as top-of the-line models. It comes with many of the features you'd expect from a flagship model, but doesn't come with all the fancy apps and smart home integration you'd get from other top models.

The iRobot Roomba can be set up quickly and is ready for use immediately. After removing the yellow bin insert and pull tab from the undercarriage, you simply plug it into a wall socket or its Home Base docking stations, hit the "Clean button" and let it do the job. It will return to its dock when its battery is out or it's stuffed with debris. It also has indicators at the top for when its bin is full or it requires recharging or its Wi-Fi signal has gone out.
