The sash is the interior framing that moves vertically either up or down in windows that are open. This article will show you how to make several simple sash repairs.

Weather Stripping

Wooden window sashes are a great way to add an elegant look to your home. They are also sturdy and will last for many years if they are properly maintained. Smooth the compound using a putty knife, and let it dry for at least a day. Once it's fully cured then apply a top coat of acrylic latex paint. This coating will protect the putty and give your sash a fresh look.

Sash Hardware

The hardware that supports windows sashes can become worn out over time and with use. This could lead to windows or doors that is difficult to open or close. The good news is that fixing and replacing this hardware is generally very simple and cost-effective. If a sash is difficult to operate, try spraying some grease into the jamb channel and then slide it open to see if this fixes the problem. If not, the issue is likely with the sash balance and you'll have to take off the sash to gain access to the hardware.

The ideal situation is for window sashes to be able to open and close with very little effort, but this can be difficult when the weights are worn or if the sash meeting rail isn't properly glazed. This issue can be due to various reasons, including an absence of maintenance or an unmatched weight rating.

It is important to have the tools you need before you begin. Mark the location of the hinge channel on the frame (Photo 1) using pencil. This will help you to put the channel in the proper place when you are finished. Remove the sash, and then remove the hardware including the beads that separate (Photo 2) and the chains or cords that hold it in place. Soften any hardened putty using a heat gun set to medium and equipped with a shield to block the nozzle. Remove the old sash, and store it in a bag with a label.

Sash Weights
