Genetics
The mesothelioma rare disease occurs when malignant cells of the mesothelium grow uncontrollably and invade surrounding tissues. It can also spread through the body via the blood or lymphatic system, and affect other organs. While asbestos is the main mesothelioma trigger, it is not the sole risk factor. Other environmental and genetic factors can also cause the disease.
In some instances mesothelioma is seen in people who had no direct exposure to asbestos. They are known as non-occupational mesothelioma patients. They usually had indirect exposure from the handling of contaminated clothes or home items handled by an asbestos-exposed person in their home.
