Which Lightweight Double Pushchair Should You Buy?
A lightweight double pushchair is easy to get around, particularly for families with children of different ages. They are easy to fold, steer and transport up and down steps.
This City Mini GT2 offers side-by-side seats with plenty of legroom, adjustable reclining and massive UPF 50+ canopy with windows that peek out. It also comes with a smart frame that expands widthways to take a second seat and compatible car seat(s).
Side-by-Side
Most of the lightweight double pushchairs that we tested were side-by-side models. These are best for children who can stand up without assistance, as they tend to lack car seat compatibility. The Thule Urban Glide 2 Double, and Baby Trend Sit 'N Stand Double, are both excellent options. They come with an adjustable recline for both seats, a big canopy, and padded 5-point safety harnesses. They're also easy to maneuver despite their larger footprints, and are ideal for parents who worry about fitting into doorways.
The Cybex Duet pushchair is unique because of its clever frame that expands to add another child seat. This makes it slimmer than other side-byside pushchairs. It can fit through doors that are standard and is easy to maneuver on public transport. It is also a jogger, which is ideal for those who plan to use it in conjunction with an infant car seat or baby carrier.
Another great side-by-side, lightweight double is the UPPAbaby Vista v2 Double, which offers even more customization with a modular frame. The clever design allows you to transform it into a double or single buggy by adding two carrycots or child car seats. It can even accommodate twins. It's a good option for growing families. The UPPAbaby umbrella stroller is also one of the lightest, most fashionable and stylish strollers available.
Try the egg2 which folds down to the size and weight of a tiny suitcase. It can be used as a double or single by adding 2 carrycots or baby car seats. Our home testers were amazed by the ease of move around, even with a full load of kids.
Double pushchairs with side-by-side seating aren't foolproof, though -If your children are of the same age or stage, they might still argue over who is allowed to ride in which seat. If they're at different heights, then it is possible that a tandem design is the best option for them, since it allows them to face each other.
Tandem
While side-by-side models are best suitable for siblings with similar age group, tandem light double strollers have distinct appeals. Some can accommodate carseats that are larger, and others come with seats that can be reversible. Others have an additional carrycot or reversible seat in the middle. They are larger, and easier to get into and out of. However the baskets they use tend to be smaller than those found on buggies that are single. They often have larger canopy with windows that peek out and padded leg cushions.
The iCandy Peach is another example of a good-value lightweight tandem. The fabrics are less luxurious than those of some of our top-rated doubles. However, it looks great and is easy to use. Its one-handed folding is awe-inspiring. Although it takes some time to master, Kirstie from our Lab called it "genius". It's not possible to fold it without the carrycot attached, but the mechanism for attaching and taking it off it is easy and quick.
Tandem double pushchairs are light and lightweight. They typically make tighter turns than side-byside models, but they can be more difficult to drive over bumps and uneven surfaces. They are also slightly slower to speed up and can be heavier to move, which could cause stress on your back.
Another alternative is a convertible double buggy, which is initially one-person, but you add adapters to turn it into a double. It could include a second seat, carrycot, or both in front. Or the children can sit together. Some of them also have the option to add a buggy board, which could help an older child keep up with younger siblings.
The Uppababy Vista V2 is a excellent example of a convertible, because it can also be converted into a twin pram with the purchase of additional cocoons (PS59 each) that create a lie-flat area for infants. They can be swiveled together or placed in a row. You can also use the car seat that was included with the pushchair, if it is compatible. As they're made with quality materials, these dual-use buggies can often be used for many years without showing any wear, indicating they have an excellent resale value.
Single-to-Double
This light double buggy is made for families who love the outdoors and would like to upgrade from an individual-stroller. It can be transformed into a jogger by acquiring the kit that comes with air-filled tires and all-wheel suspension. It's also a good option for twins or children of different age groups and, as a triple tandem, it is able to take on rough terrain. It's also a good option for parents looking for an elegant design that's as elegant as a single and comes in a variety of fabric colours.
This iCandy model is incredibly easy to fold using a single-handed system. It's heavier than other single-to double pushchairs, however our home tester Karolina says it's still very mobile even with two toddlers inside and the carrycot.
The seat can be used with the parent facing and you can purchase additional accessories for this stroller such as the Roma Gemini carrycots (PS100 each) which are great for infants. The seats are comfortable for toddlers with good headrests and lumbar support. There are a variety of options for reclined seats with the front seat adjustable in various positions and the back seat having an option to recline.
The biggest drawback with this kind of buggy is that it is generally larger overall than the side-by-side doubles which makes it more difficult to navigate through doorways and can be tricky to maneuver around kerbs. However, the wheels and suspension are generally able to are capable of handling paved surfaces, and the fact that they're much lighter than some of the side-bysides means that you still find plenty of storage space. It's worth bearing in mind that strollers of this type aren't as good at navigating narrow aisles in supermarkets and aren't able to handle a lot of shopping. It's a little easier to turn them around on the smallest curves of paths however, it can be difficult to turn them around on a straight path. Some are also easier to turn than others, like the Thule Urban Glide 2 Double and Baby Trend Sit N' Stand Double, for example.
Convertible
The best thing about convertible double pushchairs is the ability to adapt to the changing family needs. They often start out as single buggies, and come with adapters to add a second seat, a carrycot, or (in some cases) an automobile seat to the frame. Some are able to be converted to a single one when your child reaches the age of walk or chooses to ride buggyboards.
This stylish tri-fold double stroller is one of the lightest on our list. It can support up to 40lbs per child, and includes a storage basket between the seats. The large canopy with a peekaboo window, multi-position reclining chairs as well as front and back suspensions for smoother rides on rough terrain were well-loved by the home testers. It also comes with a handy cup holder for parents and an ample, easy-to-access basket. However, they noted that the backs of the seats have pockets that aren't big enough to hold much more than a cell phone and keys.
This high-end, lightweight side-by-side can be used in more than 20 different configurations, and comes with an additional seat and carrycot. Its impressive set of features includes a high-profile handlebar for easier steering and a rear and front suspension to smooth rough terrain; a self-standing, compact fold with handy straps that make it easy to schlep and seven-inch swing lock front wheels and 10-inch back wheels with suspension to provide a more comfortable ride. The only drawback is that you'll need to purchase an additional car seat or baby carrier.
This multi-functional tandem is a top pick from our home testers due to its maneuverability and large shopping basket that is accessible from both seats facing the parent. It is a breeze to move around due to its surprisingly low weight (about the equivalent of some single pushchairs). Many users praise the clever method of attaching the second seat or riding board in the back. Parents also loved that it accommodates infant carriers and car seats from a variety of brands. This includes a few that aren't typically compatible with other double buggies.
