Objectives
Anatomy of Respiratory System
*To be able to identify the organs included in the Respiratory System.
*Physiological aspects of organs in Respiratory System
*To describe the specialized functions of each identified organ.
*To differentiate the process of external and internal respirations.
*To explain the mechanics of respiration.

Overview
Respiratory System is a group of organs that has a main function of managing respiration or the gas exchange within our body. It involves the following organs;
Nose
Pharynx
Larynx
Trachea
Main Bronchi
Lungs

The Respiratory membrane
that possesses special functions and properties that contribute to the processes involving the system.
Respiration is the sequence of events that results in the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the atmosphere and the body cells.
Every 3 to 5 seconds, nerve impulses stimulate the breathing process, or ventilation, which moves air through a series of passages into and out of the lungs (National Cancer Institute, 2023).

In addition to air distribution and gas exchange, the respiratory system filters, warms, and humidifies the air you breathe. The respiratory system also helps the body maintain homeostasis, or balance among the many elements of the body’s internal environment. (Healthline, 2023)
According to Marianne Balleza, RN (2023) the followings are the main functions of respiratory system;

Oxygen supplier. The job of the respiratory system is to keep the body constantly supplied with oxygen.

Elimination. Elimination of carbon dioxide.

Gas exchange. The respiratory system organs oversee the gas exchanges that occur between the blood and the external environment.

Passageway. Passageways that allow air to reach the lungs.

Humidifier. Purify, humidify, and warm incoming air

Importance
The respiratory system's main job is to move fresh air into your body while removing waste gasses (American Lung Association, 2023).

Your respiratory system brings oxygen into your body and helps to remove carbon dioxide (Healthdirect, 2022).

The respiratory system is responsible for obtaining oxygen and getting rid of carbon dioxide and aiding in speech production and in sensing odors (Contemporary Health Issue).
