Wednesday Netflix Review
Wednesday netflix is a spooky, funny teen mystery, and one of the most watchable new series to hit Netflix. The series has a brilliant cast that includes Jenna Ortega as the title character, who nails the deadpan delivery Christina Ricci perfected in her ’90s movies. She’s surrounded by a fine cast of supporting characters (including a shapeshifting principal played by Gwendoline Christie and a scheming troll played by Fred Armisen). The writing crackles, and the emotional beats are strong, but it’s impossible to believe any actual teenagers were involved in the writing process.

The show takes place at Nevermore, a supernatural boarding school that resembles a cut-rate Hogwarts in the middle of a Stars Hollow-esque small town. After being expelled from her regular school, Wednesday is sent to the academy, where she finds herself tangled up in a murder mystery that’s linked to her aforementioned parents, Gomez and Morticia (played by Luis Guzman and Catherine Zeta-Jones).

As with most of these teen genre potboilers, there are plenty of twists and turns that keep the plot moving, and if it weren’t for the sheer number of these tropes, Wednesday might actually be good. It’s just that the show doesn’t feel original, and despite a large ensemble cast, no character stands out or makes an impact.

It also doesn’t help that the show has to work overtime to make up for its lack of originality. The murder mystery is interesting, and the show does a solid job of building suspense. However, the eight episode run is a bit long for such a convoluted story and there are some glaringly lazy devices that pop up to get Wednesday out of trouble (e.g., her mysterious ability to solve mysteries by gaining visions).

While it’s a solid effort overall and has the potential to become a cult hit, it’s hard not to be disappointed at how unoriginal the whole thing is. The writers behind this project have experience with teen-genre potboilers, having previously worked on the Superman high school drama Smallville and a couple of MTV teen fantasy romps. Unfortunately, none of that experience shows up in this mess.

In conclusion, it’s a shame that a talented cast was squandered on this mediocre piece of television. If the makers of this series had put a little more thought into it, they could have made something really special. Hopefully, Only For Love will give them the time and space they need to flesh this out. Until then, I’ll stick with the reruns of the original TV series.
