Yes. Birds do actually pair up each mating season, if not for life. And the male better be prepared to treat his female properly. There is actually an elaborate process in which the female chooses her mate.
Bird Reproduction
Reproduction in birds may be quite complicated and lengthy. Birds reproduce sexually and have separate sexes and internal fertilization, so males and females must mate for fertilization to occur. Mating is generally preceded by courtship. In most species, parents also take care of their eggs and hatchlings.
Courtship and Mating
Courtship is behavior that is intended to attract a mate. It may involve singing specific courtship songs or putting on some type of visual display. For example, a bird may spread out and display its tail feathers or do a ritualized mating “dance.” Typically, males perform the courtship behavior, and females choose a mate from among competing males.
During mating, a male bird presses his cloaca against his mate’s cloaca and passes sperm from his cloaca to hers. After fertilization, eggs pass out of the female’s body, exiting through the opening in the cloaca.
Like reptiles, birds have a cloaca, which is a single exit and entrance for sperm, eggs and waste. Birds reproduce by internal fertilization when an egg is fertilized inside the female. Female birds form a yolk in their bodies so the male can fertilize by passing sperm through the cloaca. With or without inter fertilization, the yolk develops into a hard-shelled egg that birds lay (usually in nests). Fertilized eggs develop a thin, fluid-filled membrane called amnion that forms a closed sac containing the embryo. The embryo of the fertilized egg develops into a baby bird that soon hatches.
All birds reproduce by laying eggs. Eggs are produced inside the female and then deposited in a nest. In captive female birds, egg laying, which is actually the equivalent of ovulation in mammals, can happen without fertilization or even the presence of a male.

The male bird inserts his reproductive organ into the female's cloaca.
The male releases sperm cells that reach the female's egg cells.
Fertilization occurs.
The embryo begins to develop from the germinal spot in the yolk.
The albumen, or egg whites, provide water and shock protection for the embryo.
The female incubates the eggs until they hatch.

What is the process of reproduction of birds?

How do birds reproduce with cloaca?
In some birds, such as geese, ducks, and game birds, there is a grooved, erectile penis inside the male's cloaca. The penis guides the sperm, which have been stored in a nearby sac, into the
Do birds penetrate when they mate?
But the sex act itself for birds is nothing to get excited about. Male birds have no penis, so, there's no penetration. Birds mate with what is known as a cloacal kiss. The male mounts the female from behind, balancing her neck.
How do birds reproduce sexually? During mating, the male bird goes on top of the female, facng the same direction. They have an entrance called cloaca which they rub against each other. From the cloaca, the male sperm passes onto the female ova, where it is fertilized.
