Leave a one-inch top and bottom margin and at least one-inch left and right margin. Do not ‘full justify’ your resume, it should have a ragged right margin. It needs to be easy to read and not overcrowded with information.
Always use the portrait (vertical view) format. Never use the landscape (horizontal view) format.
Use an easy to read font, such as Arial, Helvetica or Times New Roman. Do not use a fancy or scripted font; these can be difficult to read.
Not all fonts are universal. If you submit a resume via email, when the employer opens the attachment, if they do not have the font the file was created in, it will reformat your resume using another font which can completely mess up all of your formatting.
Use an easy to read font size. Do not exceed 12 points and no smaller than 10 points for text. You can use a larger size in the same font to distinguish between sections.
Always use short paragraphs. Preferably no longer than five lines. Use bullets to offset new sentences and sections.
Use formatting highlights such as bold, italics, and underline to clearly identify the different sections of your resume and to put emphasis on essential information you want to communicate to the employer.
Do not overuse bold and italic type. This will defeat the purpose of using these highlights because nothing will stand out.
