de ring van vuur is een hoefijzerig gebied rondom de Grote Oceaan dat bekendstaat om het veelvuldig optreden van aardbevingen en vulkaanuitbarstingen, veroorzaakt door diverse subductiezones van tectonische platen in de regio (platentectoniek). De ring van vuur vind met ook dikwijls een trog of een vulkanische boog. Het gebied loopt ruwweg van Nieuw-Zeeland via enkele eilandgroepen naar indonesie, de Filipijnen, japan, de koerilen, kamtsjatka, Alaska en de westkust van Canada, de verenigde staten van Amerika, Mexico en midden-zuid Amerika. Van alle 452 vulkanen in dit gebied zijn er zo'n 128 actief en gelden er 65 als gevaarlijk. De gordel van de Grote Oceaan (onderdeel van de ring van vuur) loopt over een lijn met een lengte van 40.000 kilometer, die zich uitstrekt van Sumatra tot Flores in Indonesië.
