This guide will help you to care for and keep Siamese fighting fish in 2024.

These beautiful Siamese fighter fish, commonly known as Bettas due to their bright colors, distinctive fins and toughness, make excellent aquarium pets. Over centuries, the fish have been selectively bred in Thailand's and Cambodia’s rice paddy streams and rivers for competition fighting. koi fish page thrive as ornamental fish in confinement. But because they fight, Bettas must be kept separately in aquariums. The guide provides all of the necessary information to house and properly care for this fascinating fish.

The Betta requires a minimum of a 2.5-gallon aquarium. A larger 5 gallon tank or bowl is preferable to allow for more stable water conditions. Bowls and aquariums require less frequent water exchanges. Bettas are stimulated and protected by tanks that have a lot of plants. Bettas may tear delicate fins if the decor is rough. Live plants or silk ones with soft, broad leaves work best. A tight-fitting hood is important to prevent jumping. Bettas, which are labyrinthfish, can take in oxygen at the surface of the water if necessary.

Bettas will adapt and tolerate many different parameters of water. The best thing for the health of your Bettas is to maintain stable, stress-free conditions. Temperature should be 78-82degF. The pH level should be between 6.0 and 8.0. The nitrates, and especially nitrates, should be reduced by performing regular partial water change. The nitrogen cycle must be established before adding fish using a culture of beneficial bacteria.

Tank Mates: Betta males should not be housed in the same tank as other Bettas because of their aggressiveness. Females can be kept together with enough space and hiding spaces. However, Bettas prefer to be solo fish. The best non-aggressive species to house in community tanks are snails, shrimps, small peaceful schools of barb or tetra fish. Bettas shouldn't be kept with platys or angels or any other fish that have long fins or are brightly colored. They may cause aggression.

Bettas are omnivorous in the wild. They eat insects and larvae. In captivity they will thrive with a diet that includes high-quality pellets, bloodworms, or brine shrimps frozen, as well as occasional treats such daphnia, or mosquito larvae. They should be fed 2-3 times a day, but only the food they can consume for 2-3 minutes.

Breeding - For breeding, keep a mated tank in 10 gallons of planted water with acidic soft water. Add a breeding trap, like an upside-down flower pot, for spawning. Feed live and frozen foods daily until fry are free-swimming. Betta splendens’ fry can be live-bearers. They hatch within 24 hrs. You can feed your fry powdered or liquid fry foods. Separate males around the time they are mature (3-4 months).

Bettas can jump very high, so it is important to cover their tank. A weekly 25% water change is sufficient. Vacuuming thoroughly will also help. Remove any uneaten food to keep water clean. Most females only live for 1-2 months compared to males. Bettas' lifespans can be extended by up to 5 year with the right care. Reduce stress by interacting daily and feeding them at the top of the water. Bettas, when given the correct habitat and attention, make excellent aquarium pets.

In summary, Siamese fighting fish are fun and easy fish to keep with their unique personalities, hardiness, and beautiful colors and fins. Bettas will thrive and continue to entertain aquarists if they are provided with the proper housing, food, water, and other care. They are also fascinating to watch because of their natural behavior and history. Bettas require only basic supplies to care for. They are a perfect choice for novices looking for their first low-maintenance fish.
