Using the same individuals from which we collected the gut and oviduct samples, we determined the relative abundance of each amplicon sequence variant (ASV) in the jejunum and cecum, as well as its incidence in the magnum. ASVs that were exclusive to one gut environment or the magnum were omitted from analysis. ASVs that were present in all three sites were grouped together and then analyzed using nonlinear regression to determine the relationship between their relative abundance and the probability that they would be found in the magnum.
These results indicated a substantial overlap between the gut and oviduct microbiomes, particularly in terms of ASVs that are exclusive to either the cecum or the magnum. In addition, the relative abundance of several gut-exclusive ASVs correlates with their frequency in the oviduct, suggesting that material from the GI tract can travel the entire length of the oviduct.
