How to Recognize Fake Five Dollar Bills
Counterfeit money can circulate widely if not detected, costing businesses and consumers millions. This comprehensive guide will arm you with the knowledge to recognize genuine $5 bills so that you can protect yourself and your money.

Fake 50 new Zealand dollars redesigned United States five dollar bill entered circulation on March 13, 2008. A variety of security features have been incorporated to make the new bill harder for counterfeiters to create. The bill’s design has been altered to include an American symbol of freedom on the front and Lincoln Memorial vignette on the back. In addition, the redesigned $5 bill has a special security thread that glows under ultraviolet light. A security strip containing microprinting of the words USA FIVE is also printed on the bill.

One of the first things to look for on a $5 bill is a numeral 5 watermark in an unprinted space near the right edge. The watermark is an image of Abraham Lincoln, replacing the portrait on the old design. Newer bills have a second watermark of three smaller 5s positioned to the left of the Lincoln portrait.

Another feature to check for is the inscription E PLURIBUS UNUM printed on the eagle’s shield and the word USA in the top of the vignette. There is also microprinting on the $5 bill's face that can be seen with a magnifying glass. These small text lines spell out the denomination of the bill in all caps. The bill’s serial number is also unique and identifies the regional Federal Reserve Bank that issued it.

If you suspect a note is a fake, hold it up to the light. The paper should be white and shiny, whereas counterfeit bills are often dull or textured. Using your finger, run it along the edges of the bill; the raised texture will feel different from the smoothness of real currency.

Look for a number that changes colors when the bill is tilted. Several bills that are higher in value have this feature, but the $5 bill does not. A thin vertical strip of text spelling out the bill's denomination should appear, changing from copper to green when viewed in different directions.

Finally, all bills $5 and higher have a security thread that is visible under ultraviolet light. This thread is woven into the bill, and when held up to light, it will glow a deep blue color. If a $5 bill does not glow under ultraviolet light, it is likely fake.

If you suspect a bill is a fake, contact police and describe the bill and the person who passed it to you. If possible, delay the passer so you can remember their physical appearance and vehicle license plate number if it is applicable. A good description of the passer can help police track down the criminals responsible for the crime. Businesses that receive counterfeit cash should contact police as well and document any losses.
