Which Mattress Toppers Are Best?
A layer of cushioning can make your bed feel more comfortable. It can also help relieve pressure on joints. But which mattress toppers are best?
Dr. Holliday Bell recommends this organic choice for those who desire the supple support and comfort of memory foam but don't want to use chemicals. It has a removable cover, and the firmness options allow most sleepers to find their ideal level of comfort.
1. Sleep Innovations Gel Memory Foam Topper
The topper is soft and comfortable for the majority of people, yet still provides support. Our testers loved how it molded to their bodies, offering support in all the right places. It also fits most mattresses well although it's difficult to get the sheets on (read more about how to put on mattress toppers here). The thick layer of memory foam is machine washable and naturally antibacterial. It also has an upholstered cover made of bamboo that is sustainably sourced and hypoallergenic. Our panelists loved it but it is important to know that there are no straps to fix it to your mattress. It can move while you rest.
The panelists that loved this topper also appreciated how it helped them with their back pain. It's an excellent choice for sleepers with heavier weights who might discover that a topper with three to four inches can ease pressure on a sensitive area such as hips and shoulders.
A two-inch layer of memory foam infused with copper wicks heat and promotes airflow to ensure a cool night's sleep. Our tester Jaclyn found the mattress to be firm enough to relieve pressure on her back, front, and side sleeping positions, but not too rigid that it made her feel uncomfortable. She also noticed that her back pain "pretty quickly disappeared over the course of the night." She was awed by how quiet the mattress is, and even when used with a soft spring mattress. The topper is also good for couples sharing beds as it stops motion transfer.
2. Coop Home Goods Retreat
Coop Home Goods mattress toppers have a soft, pillow-like feel We were ecstatic to discover this model that can only be spot-cleaned. It's made of the crosscut memory foam and the microfiber blend that is made by the brand, which makes it hypoallergenic. This is ideal for anyone looking to upgrade the comfort of a mattress, or to refresh a bed in the guest room, dorm, or rented. What makes this topper especially distinctive is the inclusion of five body-zones that have different density zones, which helps to shape and conform to your body's unique shape while still offering enough support.
The cover for this topper is made of 100% microfiber polyester that has been brushed, and it has the baffle box structure that creates pockets of fill to ensure it is evenly distributed. The topper also has four elastic straps at each corner that ensure it stays in position on your mattress. A layer of copper-infused memory foam draws heat away from your body to keep you cool during the night and is topped with another 2" layer of memory foam that is ventilated to provide even more airflow.
The Retreat is the most suitable mattress topper for sleepers who want a plush feel. When Strategist writer Louise tried it out, she reported that the mattress quickly adapted to her body and hugged her so she felt well-supported and comfortable. She typically overheats in bed however the Retreat stayed her cool and didn't move much during the night. It comes in two firmness levels and is suitable for back, side and stomach sleepers.
3. Nolah Beds Luxury Firm Memory Foam Topper
There are many options available when you're in search of a mattress topper. Some are designed to keep you cool or regulate your body temperature, while others offer some additional support or comfort. A mattress topper is a great option to improve the comfort of your mattress without spending a lot of money. A memory foam mattress topper is an excellent option for most people. If, however, you prefer an innerspring mattress that is more springy then a hybrid topper combining latex and nano-springs may be a better option.
For side and back sleepers, a more firm topper can better align your spine and reduce pressure on areas that are sensitive. Our test subject Julia was impressed by this four-inch topper by Tempur that is manufactured in the US and comes with an impressive 120-night trial. She was happy with the extra comfort and sleep quality it provided. There was an off-gassing scent when she first opened the mattress, but this went away after the next day.
This firm option from Parachute offers shredded memory foam that's not as dense, but feels comfortable. Strategist contributor Lauren Levy says that it's "much cheaper than a down-topper" and has the same marshmallow softness and baffle-box construction. She enjoyed sleeping on it, but would not recommend for front sleepers because her torso was smashed in the top.
A topper made from natural wool fleece is soft and hypoallergenic. It is not as breathable and could make you feel hot at night. Cotton is a great choice, as it is breathable and keeps you cool. Some topper fabrics are infused with graphite, copper and gel infusions to help you stay cool.
4. Sleep Innovations Gel Cooling Memory Foam Topper
This Puffy topper is a great option for those on a budget, providing a soft, gentle support that eases pressure at a low price. It comes in a variety of thickness and density options to ensure you get the best mattress.
Lauren Levy, a Strategist contributor, was thrilled that this topper is "marshmallow-soft" and has a baffle-box construction that has pillow-like fiber-fill. It's also hypoallergenic, and comes with a machine washable cover to help you maintain the hygiene of your bed.
The topper's 2" layer of copper-infused memory foam promotes airflow and helps wick moisture away during sleep so that you can remain cool. And though it doesn't have as much bounce as latex toppers, Levy found it to be very comfortable. It's perfect for those who sleep on their sides, backs or stomachs, and also for those who suffer from chronic pain.
A 10-year warranty as well as free shipping are standard. This topper is also easy to clean. Simply clean it with a spot of soap and let it dry in the sun. Just be careful not to put it in the dryer or washer because it will end the warranty.
The Sleep Innovations Gel Cooling Memory Foam Topper offers a great budget option for a dependable soft mattress. It is medium (5) firm, making it suitable for all sleepers. However those who find their mattress too firm will benefit from this mattress. It also stops motion transfer which is essential for sleepers who are combination. Similar to the Coop Home Goods Retreat topper, this one provides relief from pressure for neck and shoulder pain. The only downside to this topper is that it might not be as breathable as latex or polyfoam which is why it's not the best for those who sleep hot.
5. Nolah Beds Luxury Plush Memory Foam Topper
The Nolah Beds Luxury Plush Memory Foam Topper is a great option for those who sleep on their backs and want to soften their mattress as well as for side sleepers who want extra cushioning. The topper also helps to reduce pressure points which makes it a great choice for those with chronic pain. It's made in the USA with non-toxic materials and is a solid pick for those who sleep hot. It has two" layer of a clever copper-infused foam which promotes breathability as well as providing support. It also has a cover made of organic cotton that helps control moisture. The topper was discovered by our test subject Paige to be extremely efficient in stopping motion transfer. It also gave substantial softness without sacrificing any support. However, she noticed that the edges did not fully fit her mattress If support for the edges is important for you, this may not be the best mattress for you.
The topper is also easy to clean since it comes with an easily washable and removable cover. It's also hypoallergenic and antibacterial, ensuring a healthy sleep. It's also made with five body zones that support various areas of the mattress. It also comes with a warranty and a sleep trial of 120 nights which is more than other mattress warranties.
This is one of our cheapest options but it doesn't compromise on quality. It is made from a combination of natural latex and memory foam, which provides a luxuriously soft feel. It's a more dense layer of memory foam that provides more comfort and encourage a restful sleep. Although it's not the most suitable option for stomach sleepers as it tends to sink in too much, and may cause spine misalignment It's a great option for those looking to get more restful sleep for less.
