How to Fix Faulty Key Repairs
A malfunctioning key fob could cause a disruption to your day. With the right tools and guidelines it's easy to solve these issues.
Always make sure to ground yourself prior to attempting any repairs to eliminate static electricity. It only takes a second and is a good practice when working with electronics in general.
Check for any debris underneath the key that is defective. Breadcrumbs and other pieces of debris can become stuck under keys, preventing them from being properly pushed into.
Broken Car Keys
It's easy to take your car keys for granted until they stop working or break at the most inconvenient time. Whether you're trying to open the trunk of your car for groceries, opening your doors to go to a place or even driving your car and heading off to work - car keys can be extremely frustrating when they do not work.
Over time, keys to cars can suffer from a lot of wear and tear. They may be damaged from being dropped or thrown around, and the internal components could wear out to the point that they don't function correctly anymore. This is a huge issue since it means you aren't able to drive unless you have an extra key or your mechanic fix the issue.
The majority of car keys that are damaged can be easily repaired or replaced. If your key is just broken within the lock or ignition, you may sometimes remove the remaining piece of the key by using pliers or a coated wire. Alternatively, a locksmith can provide you with an assortment of specially designed tools for removal that are designed to slide into the key and place a pincer-like grip on the broken pieces in order to take them out.
If the car key has been broken in half, an easy and inexpensive fix can be to glue the two pieces back together. It can be difficult to align the pieces correctly however it can produce excellent results. It's a good idea keep a pair of scissors and a roll of tape handy just in case you have to alter the alignment just to a degree.
Replace the battery inside the car key fob in order to repair a broken key. This is generally the best option if your car key fob doesn't turn on and you don't have a suitable replacement. You can do this depending on the type and model of your vehicle by taking out the fob, and then opening it using an screwdriver.
If the issue is serious such as if your keyfob is not working or isn't responding, you'll need to replace it. This can be done at the dealership, however an auto locksmith will usually be more affordable. They will visit you and make the necessary repairs or even replace the key fob.
Broken Key Fobs
Car key fobs are not durable, and like all electronic devices is susceptible to malfunctions at some point. When they stop working they are not difficult to fix. First, you'll need to identify the cause.
The battery is often the cause when a keyfob stops working. The simplest and most cost-effective solution is to replace the battery. It's possible to do this at your home.
If changing the battery doesn't work, try disassembling it and cleaning it. The circuit board on the fob is comprised of "contact pads" that correspond to every button on the fob. (Lock buttons and trunk buttons for example.) The contact pads are made of rubber and are coated in an electrically conducting film that begins to fade over time. With mobile key repair swab, and some rubbing alcohol, you can scrub the contacts on your key fob to eliminate any corrosion that may be hindering their functioning.
You could also try using a pair of tweezers replace the contacts on your key fob if you think they're broken or loose. It is recommended to apply silicone to the back of the key fob before you insert the new contacts. Silicone will protect the contacts from out water.
Another reason for a malfunctioning key fob is that it is no longer linked with the vehicle. When you use a key fob, it sends the car a signal that informs it of what you're trying to do. If the key fob is unpaired, it won't recognize the car and not allow you to start the engine.
If you can't get your key fob to pair with the car, it's probably time to contact a locksmith or dealership technician. They'll have the equipment to reprogram the key fob and get it functioning again. You'll likely be charged a small amount for the service, but it's much less expensive than buying the new key fob.
Keys that aren't responsive
It's not a pleasant experience when a key on your computer ceases to function. First, ensure that the key isn't blocked by any obstruction. Over time dust, hair and other particles can build up and interfere with the circuitry of the key. Try gently removing your key and cleaning it with a rag soaked in rubbing alcohol. Sometimes this is all it takes to get your key functioning again.
If the key does not work after trying all these things, it could be an issue with your software. Certain keys are linked to specific actions in games If your key isn't working as you'd expect it to, check your game settings to ensure that the key is correctly mapped.
You may also try reinstalling your keyboard drivers to fix the issue. Drivers that are outdated or damaged can cause your keyboard to stop functioning, so it is important to always keep them updated whenever you can.
Another possibility is that the key is broken. There are two circuits that make up each key switch and as time passes, they wear down to the point where they are no longer able to detect when the key is pressed. If this happens it is recommended to replace the keyboard since the keyboard will not perform as it should.
If you've tried these fixes, but the key does not respond, it's time to have an expert examine your laptop or external keyboard. There may be a physical problem with the membrane that covers your keyboard or it could be because one of the keys has become damaged.
You can test the keys using a keyboard tester. The website will tell you whether or not the keys register correctly during the test and, if they do, it's likely due to a software issue. The other solutions can be applied to restore full functionality. You can also utilize an external keyboard until your internal keyboard is repaired or replaced.
Keys That Don't Work
Keys that aren't working can be a huge inconvenience, but they're generally easy to fix. A malfunctioning key can be caused by a piece or dirt that has accumulated under the button or it could simply not be connected properly to your laptop or keyboard. If you are unsure then clean the keys using canned air and blow away any dust or dirt.
It's possible that the key is misaligned with the lock. This is another problem that can be solved by an expert, however it is more likely to require replacement of the key. If your car key is electronic and can't be changed by pressing a metal manual key into the ignition, it's likely that the transponder chip inside has stopped working and you'll have to get an entirely new key programmed.
If your external keyboard or laptop keys seem to not be registering any action in any way, you could try a key testing website. This can help you figure out if there's any issues with the software or the keyboard itself.
A switch that isn't working correctly can also be the cause of a key not performing as is. If you own a mechanical keyboard you can look under the keycap and seeing whether there's any debris stuck to it. If you spot something, clean it by using canned air. Then remove the keycap. This will allow you to replace the hooks that connect the retainer to the switch, and hopefully bring back functionality to the key.
If a particular key on your keyboard fails to perform its expected function in one application, it's likely that the key has been mapped to another action through the game's keyboard settings. Examine the settings on your keyboard and try pressing the key again to see whether it's functioning properly. If you're having issues, it is best to buy an entirely new keyboard. It can be put in place by professionals. This is especially true if you're playing an activity that requires the use of a lot of keyboards.
