Koi or Nishikigoi is becoming more popular in America. However, the origins of these fish are relatively unknown.

https://www.grandkoi.com/shop/ was created from a variety of Carps, such as the Asian and German types. Through careful breeding over time, new color mutations began to emerge. Early color patterns are dated back to 1805. Today there are hundreds of variations to choose between. Some of the more common shades include black, white, oranges, yellows, reds, and greens. The possibilities for creating unique color combinations with the patterns available are limitless. Every pattern or shade is given a unique name that's as distinctive as its color. The preference for certain kinds varies depending on the country and location.

You can find this popular fish in various places, like Japan, Singapore, Israel, and states that are warmer, like Nevada or California. These colourful fish can be found in many local pet shops. If they're out of stock you can usually order them. However, while this allows for a wider selection to choose from compared to limited stock on hand, the drawback is that you may not be able to select specific Koi.

Unlike many other fish, Koi have the ability to reach their full dictated size regardless of their surroundings. Baby Koi are as small as three inches. Some jumbo Koi varieties may grow as long as three feet. Koi are usually measured at around two feet.

Koi, as omnivores, have an incredibly diverse diet that includes both meat and vegetables. They are not picky eaters and will consume almost anything you offer them. You must monitor the food they eat as an owner because Koi are unable to distinguish what's healthy from what's not. Overfeeding can lead to obesity. Keep to the natural foods that are found in your pond. This includes earthworms, tadpoles and other pond creatures. It is not harmful to feed Koi food like bread, lettuce, fruit and vegetables in moderate amounts. It is best to avoid giving Koi grapes, beans and corn as the casings are not digestible by Koi. When you decide to feed your Koi this type of food, remove all casings.

As peaceful fish, Koi make excellent tankmates for fish such as goldfish and Comets. Koi are fast eaters, and this can cause food shortages for smaller fish. Koi, which do not possess teeth, are so docile that they can be trained to take food directly from the owner.

Koi, under optimal circumstances, can live for up to three decades. Therefore, when considering purchasing Koi, it is important to keep this in mind. It is a Japanese Koi that holds the title for being the oldest Koi. This specimen lived 233 long years.
