3 Wheeled Buggies
A 3-wheeler can be used for off-road walks and to tackle terrain from uneven paths or woodland tracks. 3 wheeler strollers are also easier to manoeuvre up and down kerbs than models with four wheels.
MadeForMums reviews editor Kath tried one of these three-wheelers with her newborn and 3 year old, and put it through its paces on the asphalt and on the muddy ground. Read her review here.
Stability
Four-wheel buggies, which have their centre of gravity balancing by your child's weight in the seat, are typically more stable than three-wheelers. Three-wheel buggies are worth considering since they can handle anything from rough terrain to busy streets.
Choose a buggy that has large rear wheels, as well as an lockable wheel on the front. This makes it more comfortable to drive and less likely to fall apart on bumpy roads. These all-terrain buggies also have pneumatic tires that are perfect for handling non-paved surfaces. They are able to be used even on sandy beaches or tracks through woodlands.
They're also great buggies to jog with since they offer excellent stability on rougher terrain and can aid you in staying with your running companion. They're also good at climbing and down steep kerbs too, and most of them come with suspension built-in which means your child will have a pleasant ride.
A 3-wheeled stroller can be difficult to maneuver because of its wide frame. It can be more difficult to get through narrow spaces and doorways than a 4-wheeler. Some manufacturers have addressed this issue with clever design that turns the wheels upside down when they are not being used. This reduces their size and makes it easier to fit through doors.
You'll also have to consider whether your buggy is suitable for your baby from birth, or if you're planning on using it with an infant car seat or carry cot. Find out if the buggy comes with a lie-flat feature and if it is compatible with second seat and buggy boards if you plan to bring a toddler along. A lot of 3-wheelers fold flat and be upright when folded which is useful if you have a limited space in your car boot or a small storage space at home. Some 3-wheelers require you remove the front wheel in order to fold them into smaller sizes.
Manoeuvrability
Three-wheeled buggies generally provide better maneuverability than four-wheeled pushchairs. A majority of them have a swivelling wheels on the front that allows you to control and change direction with one hand. Some also come with a lockable front wheels which gives you the stability you need on rough terrain. Some models can be used with an additional buggy or seat, if you plan to expand your family.
If you plan to take your three-wheeled buggies off the paved roads, you should choose one that has pneumatic tyres. They are able to handle the most difficult terrain. These tyres might need to be regularly pumped up from time the point, but they will be more durable and puncture-proof than solid tyres. Look for a model with a lockable swivelling front wheel to help you negotiate tricky surfaces.
When folded, three-wheelers may be heavier than buggies with four wheels because of the single wheel in front. Make sure the model you select fits inside your car's boot and can be placed upright if required. Some models can be folded with just one hand, and they're freestanding when collapsed, which will save space in car boot spaces that are smaller.
A well-constructed 3 wheel pushchair will be able to deal with any terrain, from busy streets to tracks through woodlands. It's important to think about what you'll be using for your day-to-day use. If you will be making the school run using it, it must be able to handle the kerbs and steep slopes. If you plan to jog on it, ensure it has a swivelling'stretch front wheel' that is locked. This will keep the ride in place.
Kath, a MFM reviewer, found that her three-wheeled stroller was able to handle both urban and walks in the countryside. She said that it navigated cobbles, rocky paths and bumpy pavements effortlessly and felt pleasant to jog with too. It is also a good choice for day trips as it is packed with storage space. It comes with an ample, spacious zip-top basket that is covered and an expandable, 50+ UV hood. It can also be adapted for baby from birth with a lie-flat seat or carry cot, as well as being compatible with a variety of popular second-seats and buggy boards.
Fabric Sling Seat
The primary difference between a fabric sling versus a modular seat is that the fabric sling is placed in the frame of the buggy rather than sitting on top as a modular seat would. This makes it easier to maintain an ergonomically correct position of the baby, which results in a lower center of gravity, which is just the right height. This translates into an easier push, a lighter curb pop (you don't need the same amount of effort and weight to push the buggy over the curb's nose) and a better balance and stability.
These buggy seats also feature sling fabrics that are easy to clean and durable. They were designed specifically with applications for sling chairs in mind These fabrics are extremely durable and breathable. They are also easy to maintain with mild soap and warm water.
If you are a jogger, or like to do some off-roading, then an all-terrain buggy is more suited to your requirements than a four-wheeler. These models tend to have a wider base, more stable, and utilise tyres with air to allow for smooth and agile moving on uneven ground.
A brand most well-known for its car seats, Maxi-Cosi has recently added a new 3-wheeler to its lineup with the Stella. This stroller is all-terrain and has a large and spacious travel system seat unit which can be positioned either parent or world facing. It also reclines flat and has an improved 5-point safety belt. It can be used as a baby with an infant car seat or carrycot and comes with a reasonably large shopping basket and a hood that has zip pockets and a quick one-hand fold.
This 3 wheeler of luxury made for the most discerning buggy owners is as stunning to look at as it is to use. The angular frame features stunning pewter finish and touches of burnished aluminum. It is a real show-stopper. This is a great option for parents who are active. It features a spacious cushioned seat that can be set either in the direction of the parent or facing the world. It also has an upgraded 5-point harness as well as an entire set of rain covers.
Modular Seat
Modular seating can be used to create an array of configurations to meet different seating requirements. If you want a cozy setting for watching films or a large arrangement to entertain guests, modular seating is able to adjust easily. A lot of modular seating systems have cushion covers that can be removed which make it easier to clean up spills and stains.
Modular Seating can be designed to blend with existing decor or make a statement as an accent piece. A variety of fabrics, colors and shape options ensures that you can find a modular seating solution that fits your taste. Modular seating also has a variety of functional features, including storage compartments hidden from view for easy storage.
3-wheel buggies are particularly good for off-road or all terrain adventures as they have more stability than strollers with four wheels. The large, extremely maneuverable front wheel enables agile and smooth movement, whereas the tyres are typically filled with air and have suspension, allowing for a smooth ride on even the roughest trails and roads. The wheels aren't as close to the ground on these pushchairs, as they are with four wheeled pushchairs. This makes them perfect for walking uphill.
Parents who love to run and jog with their kids usually opt for strollers with three wheels because they are more nimble and sleeker than their four-wheel counterparts. The GB Upp XL for example has a sleek burnished silver aluminum frame, a quick one-hand fold and rear and forward facing seats, while the Babyzen Yoyo has an all black frame, a carrycot with full lie flat position, air-filled tyres and 3 recline positions.
Mountain Buggy Sport verso is another great all-terrain option. It's incredibly lightweight and highly maneuverable. It's also incredibly fashionable. This is a buggy that is truly future-proof for your wallet and will take you from the moment you are born with the carrycot, right through to toddlerhood using the seat that can be rearranged (and beyond!). All this is within the footprint of a single buggy.
Duet(tm) is an side-by-side buggy that is compact enough for city life but is also a bit more innovative and controlled. It comes with an exclusive fabric sling seat, which is placed snugly inside the frame and at just the right height to allow for a the perfect weight distribution to facilitate kerb popping and navigating neighbourhoods and cities.
