Vehicles Imported by Nonresidents
Non-residents who are planning to import their own cars must ensure they have all the documents needed to avoid additional charges. Particularly DOT standards demand that motor vehicles not more than 25 years old, conform to safety and bumper standards and that the manufacturer of each one affix a label on each such vehicle stating that it meets these requirements.
EPA regulations also require that all vehicles comply with standards for air pollution emission. If a non-resident wants to import a vehicle that is not in compliance with the requirements, they will need to submit EPA form HS-7 and DOT form 3520-1 along with CBP to obtain prior approval from EPA.
Imported Vehicles for Racing
Motor vehicle laws differ from state to state, however, there are a lot of commonalities across the country regarding registering vehicles and being licensed to drive.
