Fraxinus atau yang biasa disebut Pohon Ash, termasuk kedalam genus tumbuhan berbunga dari genus zaitun dan lavender, yaitu Oleaceae. Genus ini sendiri terdiri dari 45-65 spesies. Beberapa diantaranya yang berada di daerah subtropis akan tetap bersemi sepanjang tahun.
Ash berasal dari bahasa Inggris dan bahasa latin yang berarti tombak. Daunnya saling berlawanan, bijinya sering disebut sebagai "Keys" atau "Helicopter Seeds" dan termasuk kedalah buah yang disebut Samara. Sebagian besar spesies Fraxinus memiliki bunga jantan dan bunga betina pada tanaman terpisah sebagai alat perkembang-biakannya. Fraxinus atau Pohon Ash bisa digunakan sebagai tanaman hias di taman-taman atau ruang terbuka hijau yang luas. Karena pohonnya termasuk rindang pohon ini akan sangat bagus ditaruh di taman bukan hanya sebagai penghias tetapi sebagai tempat berteduh atau bersantai. Ada satu pohon yang sangat mirip dengan pohon ini yaitu pohon Rowans akan tetapi pohon rowan termasuk kedalam genus Sorbus dalam famili mawar. Kedua jenis kayu ini sering dijadikan sebagai bahan untuk membuat wand.
