3 Wheel All Terrain Pushchair
If you're looking for a pushchair to take on woodland walks or strolls along the high-street, an all terrain pushchair with a great maneuverability will be an ideal choice. These models typically have large wheels and have a powerful suspension to ensure a smooth ride over bumps and rough ground.
Many are suitable for babies and come with seats that can be positioned in a flat position or a carrycot for newborns. They also usually have foam-filled, never-flat tyres for reducing maintenance.
Suspension
A true all-terrain pushchair has a good suspension that is designed to be extra smooth and comfortable on rough terrain. This will help your child feel relaxed and comfortable. The wheels are usually big and puncture-proof to prevent injuries from sharp rocks or sharp sticks.
The larger tyres will allow you to tackle more challenging terrain with ease and some pushchairs that are all-terrain even offering the option of different tyres you can switch between to suit different conditions. Depending on the kind of terrain you like to explore, some all-terrain pushchairs have an adjustable front wheel that can be locked to ensure stability, or unlocked to allow for more manoeuvrability when needed.
For additional security Certain all-terrain pushchairs include a lockable handbrake which is much easier to reach and use with your free hand than with an ordinary brake pedal located to the side of the handlebars. This is a fantastic feature to have if you like to take on steep hills, especially with a child in the seat and a lot of shopping bags stashed underneath!
If you don't want to go quite as extreme as an all-terrain stroller, there are a lot of strollers on the market which have very good - but not the ultimate off road capability with great suspension and large wheels. They tend to be more affordable than full-on all-terrain buggy models and can be suitable for short strolls in the countryside or trips to the park.
Many of these pushchairs can be used starting at birth, either with the carrycot or a newborn-ready car seat. Be aware that the seats will not lay flat when pushing over bumps or dips. According to EU regulations, they have to meet minimum requirements of a reclining angle of around 150deg. Graco has solved this issue with its new 'comfitech in-seat suspension' that lets the seat recline at a flatter angle to provide a little more comfort. This feature is available on the Lila XP All-Terrain Pushchair, which can be paired with a compatible Graco Infant Car Seat to create a three-in-one travel system.
Seat
There's a whole range of 3-wheel all terrain pushchairs available with a fantastic off-road capability. These are perfect if you reside in the countryside or walk frequently on rough, uneven terrain. These are more robust and durable than a regular pushchair. They have special features like large puncture-proof tires that can handle the toughest surfaces. They are often quite wide and are difficult to maneuver through narrow spaces or in the aisles of shops.
The seat of an all-terrain buggy may be a parent or world facing and will grow with your child from newborn to toddler (it's suitable for children as young as 6 months). It's outfitted with foam-filled "never flat' tyres that provide a smooth ride with dual frame suspension, as well as lavish padding inside the seat, which provides great postural support and comfort. It also has a reclining mechanism, an expansive sun hood that extends, integrated ventilation and a pocket for your smart phone.
The brand new Out 'n' About Nipper V5 is another great option. It's an all-terrain stroller that's a trailblazer. It has fantastic suspension and tyres with air-filled so it can be used to run once your child is of the right age. It features an adjustable 360-degree locking front wheel that allows for effortless maneuverability as well as a swift one-handed folding. It's suitable from birth and can be paired with an UPPAbaby car seat or infant car seat adapters (sold separately).
A majority of all-terrain pushchairs lack an reversible seat, however the models like the Oyster 3, Venicci Tinum and egg 2 do have this option and both offer a very good level of off-road performance, and also have a decent weight limit for a 2-year old. There are a variety of pushchairs classified as all-rounders like the iCandy Pear and Bugaboo Cameleon, which cope very well with the rough terrain of the park or National Trust places but don't have quite the off-road capability of genuine all-terrain pushchairs.
There are also crossover models that are a great combination of extreme off-road and high-street and offer excellent all-terrain capabilities with large wheels and great suspension, but they're built more in the typical pushchair style, with reversible seats and fully-equipped carrycots, so they can be used on a daily basis. Brands like iCandy, Easywalker and Bugaboo have produced some excellent models to look at.
Wheels
If you reside in a rural location or regularly take your baby on walks over rough ground an all-terrain pushchair is vital. These pushchairs have larger wheels on the back of normal pushchairs, allowing them to handle bumpy terrain better and offer an easier ride for your child. Many also come with a robust suspension and puncture-proof models to ensure they're safe for use on woodland, grass or forest paths, gravel tracks and market town cobbles.
Some all-terrain pushchairs also feature a lockable front wheel which gives additional stability when walking on rough terrain and over high kerbs. Some have swivel wheels on the front which allows you to move the buggy more easily if you want to change direction or turn corners.
All-terrain strollers feature air-filled tyres that are great for dealing with rough terrain. However they are more prone to punctures than the solid EVA tyres that are found on light city strollers. It is therefore recommended to purchase a repair kit as well as an spare inner tube along with your pushchair. Some models come with foam tyres that are less prone to puncture but may be harder to push.
The new Bugaboo Fox 5 is a good example of a pushchair with both air and foam-filled tyres, a great suspension system and large rear puncture-proof wheels which are ideal for off-road or jogging use (once your child is old enough). The model can be used even from birth with a carrycot and a lie-flat chair.
The iCandy Peach All-Terrain is another option. It comes with large tyres, a single steering-wheel at the front, and huge tyres. It's not as pliable as some of the other all-terrain pushchairs listed on this list, but it does handle hilly terrain and has an expansive, one-handed fold which is great if you're going to be using the pushchair for long walks or trips into the countryside. It's also suitable for babies and comes with a large, extendable sun canopy and some great parent-friendly features like a simple brake pedal and a movable handlebar, as well as a large spacious basket.
Stores
Parents who want to take their children off-road, but don't want to commit to tackling Ben Nevis, there are some top all-terrain pushchairs that offer the best of both worlds. Choose a model that has an excellent all-terrain capability, solid suspension and big puncture-proof wheels but designed in the traditional pushchair style with reversible seats and full carrycot options.
UPPAbaby's popular Ridge all terrain pushchair is a great model. It has a great suspension as well as a one-handed fold and a generous basket that can support up to 10 kg. It also comes with many features that are child-friendly, like an adjustable handlebar and an operated break that can be operated by hand on the right. The hood can be removed and washed with cool soapy-water to prevent mildew or mould.
If you're going to be taking your all-terrain pushchair off-road it's a good idea to choose air-filled tyres rather than those with rubber grips. They will provide a smoother ride on uneven ground and are easier to maneuver in tight spaces. If you plan to use your all-terrain pushchair to jog occasionally, make sure that the front wheel is swivelable or has a quick-release facility to lock it in place for more stability.
To ensure that the fabric is in pristine condition, make sure they can be machine-washed. If not, a spot clean with warm water and a small amount of gentle soap should suffice. Drying the fabric completely outdoors can also prevent mildew and mould from forming.
The majority of our 3 wheel pushchairs are suitable from the moment of birth. Find models with a fully lie-flat chair and a reversible backrest to allow you to use it from newborn right up until your child is three years old. If you want to travel as a family of three, a lot are compatible with car seats due to the built-in adaptors. If three wheeled buggies 'd like to leave the car at home, there are all-terrain pushchairs that have a fixed front wheel which are ideal for a casual stroll or jogging light, such as the Delta Special Needs all-terrain jogger from Delichon which comes in a variety of sizes for canvas and frames that can be used by adults and children.
