3 Wheeled Buggies
A 3-wheeler is ideal for off-road walking & dealing with terrain that is bumpy, like woodland tracks. They are also easier to manoeuvre up and down kerbs than models with four wheels.
MadeForMums reviews editor Kath tried one of these three-wheelers while with her newborn and three year old, and put it through its paces on the road and on a rocky surface. You can read her review here.
Stability
With four wheels and a center of gravity that is balanced by the weight of your child's seat, 4-wheel buggies are generally considered to be more stable than 3-wheelers. But that doesn't mean that a three-wheel buggy isn't worth a look, since some of these models are designed to cope with everything from rough terrain to bustling high-streets.
Find a buggie with large rear wheels, as well as one that locks on the front. This will make it easier to drive and less likely to fall off when driving on bumpy roads. These buggies for all-terrain use also have pneumatic tires, which are ideal for handling non-paved surfaces. They are able to be used even on sandy beaches or woodland tracks.
They are also great buggies to jog with since they offer excellent stability on more rough terrain and can help you stay with your running companion. They can also go up and down steep kerbs, and many come with a spring suspension built-in so that your baby can enjoy a smooth ride.
One thing that can make a 3-wheeled pushchair difficult to maneuver is the broad frame, which can make it difficult to squeeze through tight spaces and narrow doors than a four-wheeler. Some manufacturers have addressed this problem with a clever design which flips the wheels upwards when they are not being used. This reduces their dimensions and makes it easier to fit through doorways.
If so, check for a lie-flat position and also whether the design is compatible with second seats and buggy boards (if you want to add the toddler). If so, make sure it has a lie-flat position and whether the design is compatible with other seats and buggy boards (if you'd like to add a toddler onboard). Many 3-wheelers fold flat and can be stood upright when collapsed and is handy if you have a small car boot or only a little storage space at home. However, some require you to remove the front wheel prior to folding if you wish to fit into more compact spaces.
Manoeuvrability
Three-wheeled buggies are more maneuverable than four-wheeled strollers. They typically have a swivelling wheel on the front which allows you to change direction quickly and steer using only one hand. Some models also have a lockable front wheel which gives you the stability you need on rough terrain. Some models can be used with an additional seat or buggy board in case you're planning to increase the size of your family.
If you're thinking of taking your three-wheeled bike off the tracks that are paved, it's worth choosing one that has tyres with air in them (also known as pneumatic tyres) which can cope with the most difficult terrain. They may have to be regularly pumped up from time time, but they will be more durable and puncture-proof compared to solid tyres. Find a model with a the ability to lock the swivelling wheel on the front to assist you in maneuvering difficult surfaces.
The fact that there is only one front wheel could be a reason that three-wheelers tend to be more bulkier than buggies with four wheels when folded. Be sure that the model you choose fits in your car's boot and can be set up upright if needed. Some models are able to fold with one hand and stand on their own when they're collapsed, which will save space in smaller car boots.
A quality 3 wheel pushchair can cope with any terrain, from busy streets to woodland tracks. It's important to think about the way you'll use it every day. If you're planning to run the school run, it ought to be able to handle steep slopes and kerbs. If you're planning to run with it, make sure it has a swivelling "stretch front wheel' that can be locked. This will keep the ride stable.
MFM reviewer Kath found her three-wheeled buggy able to cope really well on both rural and urban walks. Kath said it negotiated rocky paths, cobbles and bumpy pavements easily and was comfortable to jog with. It's also a great option for day trips because it has a lot of storage space. It has a large, spacious, zip-top covered basket as well as an extended, 50+ UV hood. It can also be adapted to accommodate babies from birth using an adjustable seat that can be sat on or a carry cot, as well as being compatible with most popular second seats and buggy boards.
Fabric Sling Seat
The key difference between a fabric sling and modular seats is that the fabric sling fits comfortably inside the frame of the buggy as opposed to sitting on top like a modular seat. This allows for a more ergonomically-correct position for baby, which instantly delivers an lower centre of gravity and a more appropriate height. This leads to a more comfortable push, a lighter curb-pop (you don't need to exert as much effort and weight to lift the buggy off the curb) and more stability and balance.
These seats also come with sling fabrics that are easy to clean and durable. Made specifically for the use of sling chairs in mind they are durable and air-tight. They are also easy to maintain with mild soap and warm water.
If you're a jogger, or like to do some off-roading, an all-terrain 3 wheeler will be more suitable than a 4-wheel buggy. These types have a bigger base, are more stable and have air-filled tyres that allow for smooth, easy mobility over rough terrain.
A brand most well-known for its car seats, Maxi-Cosi has recently added a new 3-wheeler to its line-up with the Stella. This all-terrain buggy boasts an enormous huge and spacious seat that can be world facing or parent facing and reclines flat using an upgraded 5-point safety harness. It can be used with a car seat or carrycot starting at birth. It also has a large shopping basket.
This luxury 3 wheeler is designed for the most discerning buggy owners is as stunning to see as it is to use. The angular frame is finished in a stunning pewter black with hints of silver-burnished aluminum throughout and gives it a true wow factor. This is a great choice for active parents. It features a spacious, padded seat which can be placed either with the in the direction of the parent or facing the world. It also features an improved 5-point harness and a complete set of rain covers.
Modular Seat
Modular seating can be configured in various ways to meet different seating requirements. Modular seating can be easily adjusted to create a relaxing place to watch films, or a large arrangement for entertaining guests. Many modular seating systems include removable cushions, making it easy to clean up spills and stains.
3 wheel double stroller can be designed to blend with existing decor or stand out as an accent piece. A variety of fabrics, colors, and shape options means that you can find an alternative seating option that is a perfect fit for your preferences. There are many functional features available in modular seating such as hidden storage compartments that permit simple organization and clearing of living spaces.
3-wheel buggies offer more stability than 4-wheel strollers, making them ideal for off-road and all terrain adventures. The huge, highly maneuverable front wheel allows for agile and smooth movement, whilst the tyres are typically air-filled and feature suspension, which gives you a great ride on the roughest of trails and roads. The wheels are not as close to the ground on these pushchairs, as they are with 4 wheeled pushchairs. This makes them ideal for walking uphill.
Parents who like to run and jog with their children often choose 3-wheel prams because they're more agile and sleeker than their four-wheel counterparts. The GB Upp XL for example is a sleek and polished aluminum frame, which has a quick one-hand fold and forward and rear facing seats, while the Babyzen Yoyo has an all black frame, a carrycot with full lie flat position, air-filled tyres and 3 recline positions.
Mountain Buggy Sport verso is another great all-terrain option. It's extremely lightweight, highly maneuverable and amazingly fashionable. The buggy will last from birth, and comes with a carrycot included, to toddlerhood with the modular seat. It all fits within the footprint of one buggy.
Duet(tm) is a side-by-side buggy that is small enough for city living yet also innovative and controlled. It features a unique fabric seat that is positioned comfortably within the frame at the ideal height for weight distribution. This makes it easy for jumps over kerbs, and navigates neighborhoods and cities.
