Why You Should Focus On Making Improvements To 3 Wheeler Buggies
3 Wheeler Buggies

A three-wheeler is perfect for tackling off-road terrain providing a smooth ride for your child. They are also more convenient to push and maneuver than a four-wheel buggy, particularly those with fabric sling seats or seats that are set snugly in the frame, offering the best geometry and weight distribution.

Stability

A three-wheeler has great stability, which is why it is a great choice for off road walking (especially with an all-terrain or off-road style seat unit). These buggys often have oversized front tires that can withstand bumps, kerbs, and rough terrain. Some have a lockable wheels on the front to provide additional stability when driving on uneven terrain.

It is important to keep in mind that 3-wheel buggies have lower centers of gravity than 4-wheeled versions and, therefore, are more likely to fall over. That said, the best 3-wheel pushchairs are designed with an ideal geometry and design to ensure that they remain stable in all conditions. They should be able of turning at a single click, be easy to steer with one hand, and feature 360o swivelling front wheels which makes them ideal for maneuvering and navigating difficult terrain.

Look for models with pneumatic tyres. These are made to be able to navigate tracks that aren't paved and should be able to take on dirt, gravel, rocks, etc. Many all-terrain buggies include an swivelling wheel at the front which can be locked for greater stability when dealing with rough terrain.

A 3-wheeler is an ideal option for runners and those who like to walk fast and uphill, particularly when you plan to attach a car seat or carrycot. The Roma Atlas is a great example, with a wide-facing seat that reclines flat and features a more comfortable 5-point harness and storage space for all your equipment (plus an extendable 50+ sun hood). It's lightweight, compact, and suitable for use starting at birth. It can be used with the car seat or carrycot. It also handles some moderate jogging, but it's not designed for serious runners.

Weight

If you're seeking a buggy that can handle the tough terrain, you need one with big wheels. They can handle cobbles, grass, and dirt tracks while providing a smooth ride for all passengers. They're also ideal for jogging because they're equipped with suspension and are simple to get up and down kerbs. However, the downside is that they are quite heavy to push.

The best 3 wheel buggy for rough terrain is the Mountain Buggy Urban Glide 2 (pictured above). This 3-wheel buggy has 16 rear wheels with an swivel wheel lockable to the front, so it's very manoeuvrable. It has air-filled tyres which require pumping up every now and then. It can accommodate children as young as the age of three. MFM reviewer Kath said that her toddler enjoyed the shape of the seat, and she found it easy to steer with her 3-year-old son on the board.

Another option that is great is the Baby Jogger Versa GT, which has an adjustable handlebar and a high-quality hood with 50+ UV protection. It is also easy to move up and down kerbs, and can fit into the boot of a car that is small. It can be used as a stroller and baby carriers or toddlers.

Fabric sling seats sit snugly inside the buggie's frame instead of on top of it like modular seats. This model has a lower centre-of-gravity, which is the right height. It is simpler to push and lighter to kerb pop (you don't know how many times you'll need to do that as a new parent!).

Seating

There are many options for seating in 3 wheelers. For babies it is possible to use the included carrycot and (which MFM reviewer Alice says is a cosy and comfortable lie-flat bed that can be used on and off the buggy), while older babies and toddlers can use the parent or world-facing seat that is spacious and padded and does have adjustable ventilation. It's worth noting that the seats aren't fully reclined however, they can be adjusted to the lowest position that will still allow your child plenty of headroom and room to move around.

A sling seat made of cloth is also available. It is positioned snugly inside the frame, rather than on top like an open-back seat. This provides a lower center of gravity and a perfect weight distribution. This makes it much easier and lighter to push particularly over bumpy terrains or curbs. MFM reviewer Kath really liked the way this type of seat handled these challenges.

Alongside a huge shopping basket, this type of buggy typically has some very useful features like an extended 50+ UV hood, a simple brake pedal, and some games-changing visibility lights that come up from the handlebar and can be positioned in front of the occupants to ensure their safety when they are tackling difficult terrain.

If you're seeking a buggy that will grow along with your family it's the sport(tm) is a first in the world that can take in infants and be modified to accommodate three or more children as they grow. All in one footprint.

Stores

The 3-wheeled frame is more stable and can be pushed by one hand. It's also better for terrain that is difficult. However, it means that the shopping basket doesn't hold the same amount as a 4-wheeled buggy.

A good quality ATP will have a top suspension, pneumatic tyres as well as padding for the handle for your convenience. It is also equipped to carry the form of a car seat and carrycot and you can use it from the time you are born.

MFM's reviewers have found that the 3-wheeler frame won't fit through all the doors in their homes, or small car boots - make sure to check the dimensions of the buggy once it's folded prior to purchasing for those who are concerned about space.

Find a 3-wheeler that has 2 (or 3!) seats. This is the best option for your child's future and will save you money. The iCandy strawberry sport is one of the top of them; it can be used as a single seat from day dot and later converts to twin buggies when your baby starts walking.

Tyres

Air filled tyres are designed to provide your child with an easier ride by cushioning out bumps and uneven surfaces. 3 wheel double buggy are commonly included on pushchairs such as the Phil and Ted's Sport, which MFM reviewer Kath said offered "an amazing ride for her toddler". She also mentioned that the grippy tyres on the Phil and Ted's Sport made it easy for her to maneuver around the kerbs and other obstacles.

These tyres are sometimes tricky to keep inflated and will need to be replenished regularly. These tyres are more susceptible to punctures, which is why it is recommended to always carry a repair kit and spare inner tube when you're out and out and about.

PU tyres can be used on pushchairs because they are a cheaper option than air-filled tyres but are just as robust. PU tire are easily identifiable by their matte finish and soft feel. They also slide easily on even and tied surfaces.

If you move your hand over the tyres, you can determine if they're PU or rubber. If it feels like it is sliding then it's a PU. You can also check whether your buggy has PU tyres simply by sliding the tyres onto flat, clean surfaces - they'll be able to roll easily and fit snugly in their wheel hubs.

Foam tyres are typically used in high-performance buggies as well as joggers since they are able to cope with the rough terrain that's associated with this kind of pushchair. The downside of this is that the foam could expand and cause your buggy to feel less stable since it loses its springy quality. The tyres can also be noisy because they generate a lot noise when you turn and navigate around the town.
