3 Wheeler Buggies
A three-wheeler is perfect for off-roading and provides a smooth ride for your child. They are also simpler to push and manoeuvre than a four-wheeler especially those equipped with fabric slings or modular seat units, which are positioned tightly in the frame to provide the most efficient shape and weight distribution.
Stability
A three-wheel buggy has excellent stability, which is why it's an ideal option for off-road walking (especially with an all-terrain or off-road style seat). They usually have large front wheels that can deal well with kerbs and bumps and rough ground. Some models have a lockable wheel in the front to give you additional stability when driving on uneven terrain.
It is important to remember that 3-wheel buggies may have a lower center of gravity than models with four wheels which means that they topple over more easily. That said, the best 3-wheel pushchairs have an ideal geometry and design to ensure they are stable in all conditions. They must be able to pivot at a single click and be easy to steer with just one hand, and have the front wheel rotate 360o that makes them great for maneuvering and navigating challenging terrain.
Look for models with pneumatic tyres. They are made to work on tracks that are not paved, and should be able to take on rocks, mud, gravel and more. Many all-terrain buggies feature a swivelling front wheel that can be locked to increase stability when tackling extremely rough terrain.
A tri-wheeled pram is a great choice for runners and those who enjoy walking fast uphill. This is particularly true if you are planning to attach an infant car seat or carrycot. The Roma Atlas is an excellent example. It features a flat-reclining seat with a 5-point harness, and plenty of storage space for everything you need (plus an extendable 50+ sun hood). It's lightweight and compact, and is suitable for use starting at birth. It can be used with either a car seat or carrycot. It also handles some light jogging, but isn't designed for serious runners.
Weight
If you're looking for a buggy to tackle difficult terrain, then you should select one with big tires. These are designed to handle dirt, cobbles, and grass tracks with ease while providing smooth riding. They are also ideal for jogging as they come with built-in suspension and are easy enough to climb up and down kerbs. The trade-off is that they are quite heavy to push.
The Mountain Buggy Urban Glide 2 is the most suitable 3 wheel buggy you can use on rough terrain (pictured above). The 3-wheel buggy comes with 16 rear wheels and an swivel wheel lockable to the front, so it's very manoeuvrable. It comes with tyres filled with air which require pumping up every now and then. It can accommodate children as young as the age of three. MFM reviewer Kath says that her toddler was awed by the shape of the seat and found it easy to drive with her three-year-old in the seat.
The Baby Jogger Versa GT is another excellent option. It comes with an adjustable handlebar, a top-quality hood that offers 50+ UV protection and an extremely high-quality hood. It is also easy to move kerbs up and down, and can fit into the boot of a car that is small. It can be used as a stroller with a carrycot for newborns or toddlers.
Sling seats made of fabric fit snugly inside the buggie's frame rather than over it like modular seats. This style has a lower centre-of-gravity, which is the right height. It is much easier to push, and lighter to kerb-pop (you cannot underestimate how many times you'll need to do that as a brand new parent!).
Seating
The seating capacity of 3 wheelers is impressive, and there are a number of different choices to choose from. For a newborn it is possible to use the included carrycot and (which MFM reviewer Alice says is a cozy and comfortable lie-flat bed that can be used on and off the buggy) In addition, older babies and toddlers can sit in the parent-facing or world-facing seat that is spacious and padded and does have adjustable ventilation. The seats are not able to recline completely, but can be lowered to the lowest position. This should still allow your child to have plenty of room and headroom.
A sling seat made of fabric is also available. It has the advantage of being positioned snugly inside the frame rather than over the top of a modular seat and this provides a lower center of gravity as well as a perfect weight distribution. This makes it easier and lighter to push, especially over bumpy terrain or curbs. MFM reviewer Kath was impressed with the way this type of seat handled these challenges.
In addition to a big shopping basket, this type of buggy usually has very useful features like an extended 50+ UV hood, a simple brake pedal and some game-changing visibility lights that appear from the handlebar and can be positioned in front of the occupants to improve their safety when tackling tricky terrain.
If you're searching for a stroller that can grow with your family it's the sport(tm), a world-first, can accommodate a newborn and then be modified to fit two or three children as they grow, all within one footprint.
Storage
The 3-wheeled frame makes the buggy more stable and stable to push with one hand and is also ideal for handling terrain that is difficult to navigate. The shopping basket is smaller than a 4-wheeler.
A high-quality ATP will have a top suspension, pneumatic tyres and padding for the handle for your convenience. It will be able to accommodate a car seat, meaning you can use it from the time of birth.
The MFM reviewers noted that the 3-wheeler frames couldn't pass through their doors at home or car boot. If you're worried about space, be sure to verify the dimensions of the buggy once it is folded prior to purchasing.
It's worth looking into 3-wheelers that can accommodate 2 (or even 3!) This is the most suitable option for your child's future and will save you money. The iCandy Strawberry Sport is one of the most well-known. It can be used from day dot as a single buggie and later transformed into twin buggies once your baby is walking.
Tyres
Air filled tyres have been designed to give your child more comfort while riding by cushioning out bumps and uneven surfaces. These are found on pushchairs like the Phil and Ted's Sport, which MFM reviewer Kath said offered "an exceptional ride for her toddler". She also noted that the grippy tyres make it easy to navigate kerbs and cobbles.
These tyres are sometimes difficult to maintain their inflation and need to be filled regularly. These tyres are more susceptible to punctures, so you should always have a repair kit and spare inner tube when you're out and out and about.
PU tyres are typically found on pushchairs as they are less expensive than tyres filled with air, but they are just as durable. PU tire are easily identifiable by their matte finish and supple feel. They also slide well on smooth and tightly woven surfaces.
You can usually identify the difference between air-filled and PU tire by running your fingers over each one. If it feels hard, then it's made of rubber, If it slides, then it's a PU. You can also check if your buggy is fitted with PU tyres sliding them across flat, clean surfaces. They should roll smoothly and fit comfortably into wheel hubs.
Foam tyres are typically used in high-performance buggies as well as joggers since they are able to cope with the rough terrain associated with this type of pushchair. The downside of this is that the foam could compress and make your buggy feel less stable since it loses its springy nature. three wheel pushchair are also noisy because they generate lots of noise when you turn and navigate around the town.
