3 Wheel Buggies
Three-wheel buggies are stylish and sleek, and have outstanding maneuverability. Many of these have an sling made of fabric with an incredibly comfortable lay flat bed, perfect weight distribution and are suitable for babies from the age of.
The wheels are larger, and they also often have suspensions for smooth movement over a variety of terrains. The only drawback is that they can be more heavy and bulkier to store and transport.
Stability
Three-wheel buggies offer lots of stability. They aren't prone to tipping over as easily when driving straight. They also allow you to maneuver faster. However, if you try to stop or turn abruptly they'll lose their stability and can be prone to tipping over. Some manufacturers add an extra wheel to their 3-wheel buggy designs in order to improve the stability of the chassis.
You can also take on off-road terrain with the extra wheel. Look for models that have air-filled tyres (also known as pneumatic tyres) because they can deal with off-road trails as well as other surfaces such as rocks, sand and mud. They'll also usually have a lockable front wheel to give stability over rough terrain.
Buggies are easy to maneuver and agile, thanks to a 360o front swivel wheel. They'll also pass the same rigorous stability standards and tests as 4-wheel buggies.
If you are looking for a seat made of cloth they are typically lower in the frame compared to modular seats. This means that your baby's center of gravity will be closer to the ground, instantly providing an easier ride.
Maxi-Cosi is a household name for its car seats however, it recently expanded its product range with the Citylife compact travel system and pushchair. This 3-in-1 is perfect for urban life, and comes with a baby car seat or carrycot. It comes with 4 wheels and has an exclusive pewter black aluminium frame, which the brand claims is 'light and compact'. It's actually only 2cm wider than the Babyzen Yoyo.
Folding
There's a variety of 3 wheel buggies that fold compactly to fit into smaller spaces. Many of them can be folded using just one hand, and are simple to wash down. Some of the smaller models have a simple handlebar-height adjustment, while others feature adjustable suspensions and an ultraviolet canopy of 50+ that can be extended. Some models could have an enormous basket as well as brake levers that are quick-release.
The most efficient 3 wheeler for rough terrain
A 3-wheeler is likely to be better able to cope with off-road conditions than a 4-wheel model, but both can be stuck in difficult spots. However, selecting a model with bigger wheels both front and back can help. This allows you to push them over rough terrain, and can help you get up and down high curbs.
One option is the brand new Roma Atlas, which has been praised for its agile handling despite its 3-wheel design. MFM reviewer Kath tested it with her infant and her 3-year-old, and said "it handles really well over bumpy pavements, cobbles, dirt roads and gravel tracks and also on some hills."
Stella, the new all-terrain 3-wheel buggy by Maxi-Cosi, is another option. It's suitable from birth when used with the carrycot. It's little bigger than the lightweight 4wheelers (with a surprisingly slim frame of 54cm wide) but has big air-filled tyres. It also has 3 recline positions, and a swift one-hand fold.
Its most appealing feature is its modularity - it's compatible across all the brand's car seats and strollers for infants. This means you can create your ideal travel system for day-today or longer walks, using only the chassis as a foundation.
Tyres
The tyres on 3 wheel buggies are available in a variety of designs and materials, and each comes with its pros and cons. Air-filled tyres, for example provide a smooth ride and great maneuverability while foam-filled tires are more durable. The type you choose will be based on your personal preferences and where you live.
If you plan to travel on roads that are not paved or on rough terrain frequently you may be interested in a three-wheeler that has more durable tyres. Also, you should consider the type of suspension that you require. Suspensions that are strong are ideal for tackling bumps and humps however they can be quite heavy, adding to the overall weight.
The size of the tyre can be crucial. Understanding how to read the size of the tyre is crucial for safety, performance and longevity. The combination of numbers and letters on the sidewall of a tyre can seem at first, but decoding it allows you to understand the dimensions of the tyre. A tyre with an 185/70 size R14, for example is a radial tire that has a size of 185/70 with 14-inch rim diameter.
PU tires are lighter and more puncture-resistant than rubber tires. If pushchair 3 wheels if the tires on a pushchair are rubber or PU tires, try sliding the tires on a smooth and tied surface. If they slide easily, then the tires are made from PU. If not, then they are made of rubber.
Suspension
The suspension on a 3 wheel buggy is an essential aspect to consider as it absorbs the bumps and knocks of rough terrain, making it more comfortable for your child. Large wheels that are air-filled, and are able to be locked to ensure stability when running are crucial. This will allow your buggy to travel on off-road surfaces easily.
There are a variety of buggy styles that will suit any budget and style of life. The Mountain Buggy, for example, pioneered all-terrain agility with three-wheel buggies. With perfect geometry and engineering their sling seat made of fabric rests comfortably inside the frame as opposed to on top like modular seats, providing an lower center of gravity and sitting at the perfect height to ensure optimal weight distribution, allowing it to easily take on the kerb pops.
The Urban Glide 2 by Thule is a great alternative. It has sleek design, a huge wheel that's easy to maneuver and is paired with an impressive suspension. It also has the twist handbrake to facilitate ease of use. MFM reviewer Kath put the buggy through its paces by taking it for a walk through rough terrain. She was impressed with how it performed admirably and claimed that it "navigates over bumpy grass, cobbles, sidewalks, and dirt tracks, and makes it easy to drive up and down kerbs".
The Roma Atlas, like the Urban Glide 2 is a popular off-road option. It is available in a variety of colors that will match your style. It also has an adjustable handlebar, a large basket, and an ultraviolet hood that is 50+. You can also choose from a range of infant car seats to convert the buggy into a pram. This includes the elegantly designed carrycot plus(tm) which is a cosy lie flat bed for newborns and babies that are up to 12 months old.
Safety
Four wheels make the buggy more stable and less likely to tip, and easier to handle. It also makes it safer for your child because the weight of their body is evenly dispersed across the frame.
A four-wheeled buggy has a lower center of gravity, which makes it easier to get over curbs and climb up. The fabric sling seats are placed inside the frame rather than on top of it like modular seats. This results in a lower seating position and buggy that is easily moved.
However, if you want to go out for an exercise with your child then a 4-wheeler may be better suited as it comes with a suspension system that allows the front wheel to move independently of the rear one to allow you to tackle rough terrains and bumpy roads Be aware that not all buggies with 4 wheels are suitable for running (most aren't like the Phil and Teds). The exception is Mountain Buggies which have a specially designed suspension system that has been tested independently on all kinds of terrain.
