Insidious 3 begins by displaying the institutions of the film, Sony Pictures and Stage 6, Stage 6 is an American film company created by Sony Pictures, and produces and distributes low budget films, which are often associated with horror films as they can be filmed in locations such as fields, woods, and streets. The logos fade out, whilst diegetic sound is used as a voice over of the main character Quin, as she explains the story of wanting to have contact with her mum, whom is dead. This signifies the Todorvos theory through the use of creating a narrative by speech and short takes. The short takes capture various pictures of Quin and her mum as she explains “sometimes I can feel her around me” the audience would feel two different emotions to this could be seen as creepy or cute that she can connect with her mum.

A zoom in short take is shown as it signifies various well-known horror films, The Purge and Sinister also created by this institution. This captures the secondary fans as those who enjoyed these other horror films will want to watch insidious 3, however due to the film being a franchise the film is certified viewers as audiences enjoy watching sequels to films to see how the story develops, creating a narrative over three insidious films. Although the trailer show there is a narrative story, the over all story is still hidden to create suspense. The suspense is created through Quin being able to communicate with the ghost through various ways however the audience isnt able to see the spirit which she is communicated with. Various long takes are shown of the spirit abusing Quin mentally and physically, during slow dark horror theme music is played behind the voice over, this is used to create tensions and make the audience feel more tense whilst watching the trailer. The trailer long takes begin to get faster and faster showing more events within the narrative story, as this is happening the theme music increases in speed to build suspense, however the build up ends in silence as Insidous 3 logo is faded in.

Smoke and lights were used as an effect to create a spooky, mysterious locations. The use of the mist creates a cold, uneasy mood. The use of one light allows light to the character which the film developers want the audience to see however the audience are made to feel on egde as they are unable to see the characters which may be sourrounding them ready to cause a scare. This trailer follows codes and convetions of a typical horror film through the blue overlay used on the trailer clips, the dark locations, a big spooky american house, and characters which can connect to spirits.
