The two countries exchanged $2.1 billion in 2018. The commerce between the US, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan totalled $315 millions in the same time frame. The US is Central Asia's most important economic partner.

Kazakhstan could play an important part in the Ukraine/Russia conflict. In the eyes of the United States, Kazakhstan is an important country. As peace has returned to the country, Kazakh president Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has made significant changes to the power of the ruling elite structures, causing questions and worries. Tokayev has been appointed as the chairman of the National Security Council. He succeeds the president Nursultan Nagayev, whose financial influence has angered protesters.

Three sons-in-law of the president's son were dismissed from state-owned businesses, and his nephew was dismissed too and Karim Masimov, who was the intelligence head, was detained for the crime of treason. Many other Nazarbayev-affiliated top officials and business elite have lost their jobs, left overseas for extended vacations, or were forced to make large "donations" to the state.

Tokayev is a businessman who has developed connections to the West and also with countries in the region. To retain his popularity, Tokayev hasn't been a major irritant to Putin. Kazykhanov could disrupt that equilibrium. As war rages in Ukraine, Washington should carefully monitor developments in Kazakhstan that could signal a variety of conceivable power transition scenarios that are both positive and negative.
