Growing up, I never really took any of my future career choices seriously. They have been pretty vague; a doctor, a lawyer, a forensic scientist… I never really thought about what I wanted to do with my life until reality smacked me in the face a year ago. I was a sophomore practically a junior, what was I going to do after I graduated high school. Certainly I wasn’t going to work at a place that I would have to work to get on every single day, I wanted a career. Under the influence of anxiousness and uneasiness, I began to do research on what I could do in life. I knew that I wanted to do work that involved mathematics, I had always found an affinity to it; the computations and real life applications that one could apply to the world fascinated me. I began my trek and unknowingly stepped into the STEM world.

I opened the door to the engineering world. I began to look for possible careers in the STEM field, I began to look for related programs in which I could participate in both in and out of school. I had taken I had gotten into two summer programs the summer of 2015, Scripps College Academy and Rensselaer PREFACE program. They were both integrated into the STEM field, the latter more than the former. After spending my summer at PREFACE I decided to pursue a career as an industrial engineer because it involved various elements of creativity, technology, business, math and science. Being an industrial engineer would allow me to figure out how to produce a product that would work quickly and efficiently. Taking a step into this career would help me design various systems that increase fecundity for others. As an industrial engineer I would love to help the world function at a better pace than before. My hope in pursuing this career is to be able to effectively help others save time, material and energy for people.

I heard about the about the MIT Engineering Outreach program after seeing my friend’s pictures while she attended the MITEs program. She told me about the help and opportunities that she gained from it which only made me want to apply even more. I saw this as a great opportunity to gain a unique experience on engineering at one of the county’s most prestigious universities.
