Characters that are seen as popular and well known are often duplicitous in their personalities as they can be selfish and self-centered. This is seen through Gil Junger's 10 Things I Hate About You where Joey Donner is seen as the popular and likable jock but has a personality that is very selfish and self-centered. The use of the over the shoulder shot that depicts Joey showing off a pose to Bianca depicts him as a guy who thinks he is more masculine and more dominant than everyone else in the party and this is furthermore, exaggerated by the beer pyramid he has made to emphasise that the amount of beer is drunk determines the masculinity obtained. This embodies toxic masculinity as it introduces the unethical sides of Joey embracing the negative activities such as drinking and also trying to stand out with his physical attributes in order to impress Bianca and seduce her into him.
