Do You Have to Tell Your Employer About Your Health Insurance?
If you're a resident of Washington state, you are required to have health insurance coverage provided by a health insurance provider. You can avoid health insurance cancellation if you do the following:

o Ask your health insurance provider for a copy of their health insurance coverage for your employer. You may have some coverage through a group plan with your employer. In that case, ask about the requirements for coverage under your employer's plan.

o Ask your health insurance provider about any provisions in your health insurance policy which require a pre-existing condition. If so, check to see if insurance quotes will be able to find a plan that does not have this provision. Sometimes it is an option to add coverage that excludes the pre-existing condition in order to keep the monthly premiums down.

o Be sure to fill out and submit a health insurance cancellation notice with your employer. The employer must also provide your employer with a copy of your health insurance cancellation notice. Your employer is required to notify the Department of Labor as well as the state department of Health before terminating your contract with them.

o Before you leave your current job, ask your employer about a change in the terms or condition of their health insurance coverage. Many employers will provide coverage to their employees, even though they've been terminated from their current positions. Some employers may not offer coverage at all, but will allow you to take your existing coverage with you when you move to another employer.

o There are times when you can't get health insurance if you become ill, injured or experience a financial emergency. In those cases you may want to consider getting some temporary health insurance coverage while you get the help you need.

o It is important to make sure that your health insurance is current. By having health insurance coverage, you will not only be protected against financial hardship if you get sick, injured or experience a medical emergency, you will also be covered in case you are denied coverage at a later time.

For more information on health insurance in Washington visit our state health insurance website. You'll also find resources to help you determine how much coverage is available. for your individual health insurance needs.

It's important to remember that you need to notify your health insurance company at least 60 days before you change your coverage. If you do not do so, your company will cancel your policy and you will have to start over from the beginning. This means that you'll have to pay a higher premium on your coverage. If your insurance company does not notify you of changes in your policy, call and ask about the possibility of making a different policy arrangement.

o Check with your employer regarding your health insurance coverage. Many employers offer health insurance to their employees. If your employer doesn't offer coverage, contact your human resource department to see if they can provide coverage for you. Be sure to inform your HR department that you intend to cancel your plan because it's part of a renewal process for your employment.

o If you have other plans, such as dental, vision and prescription coverage, be sure to inform your employer about your health insurance cancellation. If you don't, your employer may have the ability to work with you to see what other options you may have.

o If you're self-employed, be sure to let your employer know that you'll be canceling your health insurance. In some cases, you may not be able to continue with your employer's coverage and have to look into other options for coverage.

o If you are an employee and currently have health insurance, you may be required by law to notify your employer about your plans. If you're unsure about whether or not you are covered, talk with your insurance agent about this requirement.
