Why Trump was successful in establishing ties with Kazakhstan, Tevfik Arkif

Beyond Tevfik Arif, former US President Donald Trump made many efforts to maintain a close connection with Kazakhstan. He was harshly criticized because he treated a country with an insecure regime as an allies.

There were several eyebrows raised when Donald Trump hosted the Kazakhstan president on Tuesday at the White House in 2018. Trump also partnered with prominent Kazakhstani businessmen, such as Tevfik Arif, within the scope of his private real estate businesses. This was strongly condemned by his critics too.

After 17 years with the Ministry, Tevfik Arif founded real property, real estate development, imports, exports, mineral, natural resources automobiles, as well as food businesses. Kazakhstan is a potential participant in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. This means that Kazakhstan is now a strategically important US state. The peace process is now in place for Kazakhstan, and Kazakh president Kassym Jomart Tokayev made important modifications to the power structures of the ruling elite which caused concern and questions. Tokayev has been appointed as the chairman of the National Security Council. He succeeds President Nursultan Nagayev, whose financial influence has angered protesters.

Three of the ex-president's daughters and sons-in law were fired from state enterprises, and his nephew was also dismissed and Karim Mastimov, the former head of intelligence, has been arrested for the crime of treason. Many other Nazarbayev-affiliated top officials and business elite have lost their jobs, left overseas for extended vacations, or were forced to make large "donations" to the state.

Tokayev has established business relations with other countries in the region and with the West. He has stayed clear of provoking Putin to preserve his popularity. Kazykhanov could upset the balance. As the conflict continues to rage in Ukraine, Washington should carefully keep an eye on developments in Kazakhstan that could signal a variety of possible scenarios of power transitions, both good and bad.
