The Reasons Mesothelioma Talc Lawsuit Is Quickly Becoming The Hottest Fashion Of 2023
Mesothelioma Lawyer Files Talc Lawsuit Against Johnson & Johnson

A man aged 24 with pericardial mesothelioma has alleged Johnson & Johnson's baby powder caused his cancer. The Oakland mesothelioma case marks the first trial to be held since J&J filed for bankruptcy and split off its talc division.

In the spring of this year, jury awards in New Jersey and California led to massive settlements in talc-related lawsuits. Plaintiffs linked their cancer to asbestos found in J&J's Shower Baby and Shower Powder products.

What is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma can be a deadly form of cancer that affects the mesothelium, the lining that surrounds organs and body cavities. Full Post is most prevalent in the lungs but can also be found in the chest and abdomen cavity. Asbestos is the sole known mesothelioma causing agent and those who have been exposed to asbestos are at greater risk of developing this disease.

The first trial following J&J declared bankruptcy on its talcum powder division began in Oakland, California this week. Jurors were inspired by the story of the plaintiff. In 2022, the plaintiff who was just 24 years old at the time, old at the time, was diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma of pericardium. He attributed the reason for his illness to his early use of Johnson & Johnson Baby Powder. The jury awarded him $25 million.

J&J has been accused of concealing asbestos risks from consumers for several decades. The company has a long track record of hiding asbestos information from regulators, and paying for asbestos tests that gave the results they desired. A number of the company's talcum powder suppliers have been named in these lawsuits and include Whittaker, Clark & Daniels and Imerys Talc America.

Many women who used talcum powder to maintain feminine hygiene in the genital region or on sanitary napkins, or condoms have gotten cancer of the ovary, and a few have been diagnosed with mesothelioma. The lawsuits claim that J&J knew for more than 40 years that using the powder could cause ovarian cancer and mesothelioma, but failed to warn customers of the risk.

Mesothelioma symptoms include breathing problems, chronic coughing and abdominal pain, fatigue and lumps or masses on the chest or abdomen. Doctors can diagnose the disease through a physical examination and imaging scans. These include CT scans (computer tomography), MRIs, PET or X-rays.

When a mesothelioma diagnosis is confirmed, patients can undergo chemotherapy, surgery and/or radiation. Depending on the location of their tumors surgeons may be able remove the affected tissue. Patients with mesothelioma may be given a life expectancy less than five years. However, aggressive treatments like extracorporeal membrane transplantation and cytoreduction using hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy may prolong the life expectancy.

What is the cause of Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma, like most cancers is caused by DNA mutations in cells. These mutations cause cells to multiply uncontrollably and form tumors in the tissues of the body. Asbestos is a frequent cause of mesothelioma. Asbestos exposure is common in a variety of industries, including manufacturing, mining, and transportation. Asbestos is usually exposed for between 20 and 40 years prior to symptoms becoming apparent. Mesothelioma is more prevalent in men than women, and is usually diagnosed in people in their 50s and 70s. The type of mesothelioma a person is usually determined by the area of their body where they were exposed to asbestos. The majority of people diagnosed with mesothelioma are diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma, which affects the lungs. Other patients are diagnosed with peritoneal mesothelioma, which is a mesothelioma type that affects the abdomen. Some people are diagnosed with pericardial msothelioma. This is a rare form of the disease which affects both the inner lining (pericardium) as well as the organ itself.

In the latter stages of mesothelioma, tumors can grow to other areas which can cause extreme discomfort and discomfort. The trial involving talcum powder in Oakland involved a 24-year-old man who developed pericardial mesothelioma from the use of J&J baby powder. His lawyers argued that J&J knew that talc contained asbestos and didn't warn consumers. They also cited a letter from 1998 to a J&J executive that revealed the possibility of asbestos in their products.

This is the latest in a string of large verdicts against J&J. In March the jury awarded $18.8 million to a woman who contracted mesothelioma ovarian from J&J's talcum powder, and last month, a jury in Missouri awarded $55 million in another case that dealt with the same issue. In addition, seven cases were added to the talcum powder MDL in the last month and brought the number of lawsuits pending to 37,522. Most of these lawsuits are filed by women who have used J&J talcum powder to maintain feminine hygiene.
