If you do choose to go this route it is important to compare the cost of the local locksmith with theirs.
Broken Keys
If your key breaks off inside the lock, it could be a major pain. There are fortunately ways to solve this issue without the need to purchase a new key.
First, remove the broken part with needle-nosed pliers. They are available in the tool section of most hardware stores. You can also use a pair of tweezers which have a a natural opening wide enough to accommodate the key blade.
Be careful not to apply too much pressure. Too much pressure will only cause the break to become worse. Apply a small amount of grease on the end of the key to reduce friction while inserting it into the lock. You can buy a lubricant spray made specifically for car keys or apply WD-40 to the end of the key.
A locksmith or a dealer in vehicles can also make a replacement key. You'll need to show a valid photo identification and proof of ownership for the dealer to issue a replacement key. They will also need to connect the new chip with your vehicle, which can take some time.

Remote Fobs
A lot of cars today have remote fobs that let drivers open doors, trunks and tailgates. Some can even start the car. These tiny wireless devices send radio signals to the vehicle and are powered by batteries. If the battery in the fob goes out, the device can become useless.
The majority of these remotes come with casings that can be opened easily. Once you have opened the case, you'll need to find the right replacement battery. Fortunately, most of these batteries are readily accessible at auto parts stores and some supermarkets.
Once you've replaced the battery, you'll have to put back together the fob that holds the key. With a screwdriver with a flat blade to gently open the fob in several places to ensure that the shell isn't damaged. Then, put the fob back together and check its buttons. If everything is in order!
If the device is not working, the issue could be more serious than just a bad battery. It could be that it has lost its program and will need to be restored by a locksmith or dealer.
Fobs usually have a button that may be used to reset their programming. It's usually a simple procedure, however it differs by vehicle make and model. The key fob must be "programmed again" to transmit the digital identification code to the car's onboard computers. This procedure differs for each car model and year. It typically involves holding buttons or levers while activating the power.
Some retailers, including some locksmiths and auto parts stores can program fobs from aftermarket stores bought online. Yu from CR warns, however, that these devices can be difficult to repair and could not function properly. If you do want to purchase a remote from an outside source be sure to choose a trusted seller. Also, read the fine print for information on whether the fob requires dealer-level programming or not.
