ADHD Diagnosis - Getting the Right One From the NHS
The NHS requires that people undergo a thorough evaluation for an accurate ADHD diagnosis. The BBC investigation revealed that a few private clinics may provide inaccurate diagnoses and prescriptions.
A valid diagnosis of ADHD is determined by the severity, number, duration and impact of symptoms. The clinician will interview the individual and examine the medical or psychiatric history, as well as family and personal history.
Diagnosis
For those who believe they are suffering from symptoms that could be related to ADHD, getting a diagnosis is a key step to getting treatment and taking control of their lives. If they feel they have ADHD or someone in their family or a friend has suggested it, getting a diagnosis can help them manage their symptoms.
The first thing that patients must do is discuss their concerns with the GP. Tell them about your symptoms and how they affect your daily routine. The doctor will direct them to a specialist mental health professional who has experience in diagnosing ADHD. The specialist is a psychiatrist who has completed specialized training in this field. This is crucial because it means that the psychiatrist will be certain that they are using the correct criteria to diagnose ADHD.
The psychiatrist will ask the patient to bring their spouse or family members and friends who are familiar with them. They'll also have to look at the patient's medical and mental background from childhood to now. They will also consider the severity of the symptoms and how they have affected the patient's life. A brain scan or blood test will not confirm the ADHD diagnosis. The psychiatrist will need take into consideration all available information.
If the psychiatrist believes that the patient does not meet the requirements for an ADHD diagnoses the psychiatrist will explain their reasoning. It could be because the patient hasn't provided sufficient details about their problems or that another condition explains their behavior better than ADHD. Alternatively, it might be that the psychiatrist feels that the patient's problems are due to something else and not due to the condition.
Certain people find it difficult to obtain a diagnosis due to the prejudices espoused by certain healthcare professionals. This is especially true if you are someone of color or a woman who was born or do not speak English natively. The NHS is trying its best to address this issue.
Assessment
If you suspect you might have ADHD or other disorders, you should have an assessment by a health care provider who is experienced in these assessments. You can ask your doctor to recommend a specialist or check at local universities' hospitals or medical schools to determine who is qualified to perform an ADHD assessment for adults. You can also ask an individual from your local ADHD support group for recommendations.
The diagnosis of ADHD is determined by the severity, number, and duration of symptoms in specific areas of life. These could include work, school and relationships. You might be struggling with being unable to perform at school or at work, or having trouble forming and maintaining relationships, or being forgetful or unorganised. It is essential to talk about these problems and not be afraid of criticism.
There are a variety of healthcare professionals that can conduct an ADHD assessment from GP's to consultants psychiatrists. However, to be able to give a legally recognized diagnosis of ADHD it must be conducted by a qualified Psychiatrist, or a Prescriber Qualified Specialist Nurse. Only a Psychiatrist can prescribe medication for ADHD.
You are usually questioned during an ADHD evaluation and it is essential to bring along a family member for assistance or to provide evidence. It is important to write down your symptoms, and how they impact your life. The doctor will ask you questions to gather information about your history and your current functioning. They will also conduct an examination to determine if there are any medical conditions that may be causing your ADHD symptoms.
You can also get an adult adhd private diagnosis through the NHS however it may take a long time due to the long NHS waiting lists. Some people prefer to pay out of their own pocket for an assessment and treatment that is private via the 'Right to Choice' pathway. It is important to keep in mind that the cost and quality of private care can vary greatly.
Medication
It is recommended to get a comprehensive and thorough assessment if are struggling with ADHD symptoms in adulthood. This will enable you to receive the correct medication and support you need to manage your symptoms. There are many private companies who offer this service. If you decide to use one of them, it is important to research the reputation of the psychiatrist, their education and experience managing neurodevelopmental disorders.
In recent months, a variety of public figures have opened up about their struggles with ADHD. Sue Perkins, the host of Great British Bake Off, was diagnosed with ADHD in her 50s. She claimed that the diagnosis "made everything seem to make sense". But, despite increased awareness, NHS waiting lists remain full of people wanting to receive the right diagnosis and treatment.
In order to avoid this, doctors often do not recommend their patients to specialist services for a private ADHD diagnosis. This is mainly because they don't have the time and, in some instances, they may be unable to locate a specialist with expertise in neurodevelopmental conditions. In certain areas, this is further exacerbated by the fact that NHS staff are often being tasked with other health requirements such as mental health assessments.
Some people also believe that private companies offering ADHD assessments are too quick to diagnose people suffering from the condition. This can have devastating consequences for some. This issue was brought up by the BBC Panorama program and there is an urgent need to improve accessibility for ADHD assessments.
If you've been given a personal diagnosis of ADHD, it is possible to treat the disorder using a combination of behavioral therapy and medication. Stimulant medications like amphetamine or methylphenidate can be used to improve productivity and focus, while non-stimulants with a slower onset like atomoxetine are beneficial for improving the ability to concentrate and control impulses.
Some patients choose to only employ behavioural therapy and do not require medication. For those who need to take medication, a post-diagnostic plan of care can be formulated at Priory. This will include a thorough medical report and titration of the final dose, which could be shared with your GP.
Post-diagnostic care
A diagnosis of ADHD can have significant financial and human cost. It is crucial to provide a psychiatric evaluation and treatment program for all adults suffering from ADHD. This should include medications as well as psychological and practical support and family therapy when appropriate. This should include workplace and family education on how to better help and manage an adult suffering from ADHD.
The first step is to interview with an expert in mental health who is trained to assess ADHD and related conditions. Patients should bring a list of their symptoms and any other mental health issues they may have to their first appointment. This interview will examine the patient's medical and mental health history and their family history. It will also discuss the impact of ADHD on the individual's daily life and relationships.
During this procedure, the doctor will make sure that the symptoms are consistent with the criteria for ADHD as defined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. The symptoms must be present in two different environments (home or at work) of the person's everyday life. It must interfere with the person's normal functioning and cause significant distress. This can be in the form of a problem in securing a job, managing finances or marriage or school problems, or in their overall quality of life.
There are a range of professionals who carry out an assessment for ADHD that includes Psychologists and Psychiatrists. Psychologists are trained in the function of the brain, however they are not able to prescribe medication. They can only provide counseling. Psychologists are qualified to diagnose and treat ADHD and may prescribe medication if needed.
If the Psychiatrist determines that the patient has ADHD requires medication, he or she will prescribe a prescription to local pharmacists. This is under the supervision and direction by the Psychiatrist. The procedure should be completed within three months following the private assessment. This will allow the patient to fully titrate into their final dosage of medication. If the GP is in agreement to continue prescribing ADHD medication on the NHS following the private ADHD assessment The Psychiatrist can write a detailed report that includes treatment recommendations. They will also draft an agreement known as a Shared Care Agreement.
