How to Get a Replacement Key For Car
When it comes time to replace a key for your car the cost will depend on which type of key you have. You can choose to call an expert locksmith or visit your local dealership.
If you have a standard key or transponder, a dealer is the best option. They can use your VIN number to retrieve the code and pair the key to your vehicle.
Lost Keys
To avoid the stress of losing your car keys, create backups and store them safely. If that's not possible, the next best option is to purchase a keyfinder tag or one of the Bluetooth car key finders that are available. This gives you a couple of days to search thoroughly (they typically come up) or at the very minimum you can get a replacement from your dealership.
If you have an old-fashioned metal key, the best option is to call your local locksmith, who will drive to the location of your car and make a new one right there even if they don't have the original. They'll charge around $20 for a traditional car key replacement.
It is recommended to contact your dealer if your vehicle has a transponder. This key has an embedded chip that sends a unique security code to the vehicle when it's close. It helps protect your vehicle from theft and other security threats. The dealer will have to change the code of your new key in order for it to function properly. This procedure can take several hours and can cost upwards of $200.
Some newer cars have key fobs that can lock and unlock the car door, as well as control other features of your vehicle. These are very useful, but they can also be a hassle to lose! You can buy an extra key fob for your vehicle online. It could be more expensive than going to your local locksmith because they will need to program it to work with your car.
You could also ask your auto dealer to replace your lost fob, but you'll need to provide proof of ownership and it will cost you more than if visited an automotive locksmith. However, they do have access to the same database as the manufacturer, so it's not impossible to obtain a replacement key from them. If you choose to opt for this option, it's important to compare the costs of the local locksmith with theirs.
Broken Keys
If your key is damaged in the lock, it can be a real pain. There are car replacement key cost to fix the issue without having to purchase a new lock.
First, take out the broken part with the help of needle-nosed pliers. These pliers can be found in the tool area of many hardware stores. Alternately, you could use a pair of tweezers with a an opening that is wide enough to accommodate the key blade.
Be cautious not to apply too excessive pressure. Too much pressure will only cause the break to become worse. Try applying a bit of oil on the tip of the key to help reduce friction when inserting it into the lock. You can purchase a lubricant spray specifically designed for keys used in cars or coat the ends of the key with WD-40.
Another option is to visit a locksmith or vehicle dealership to have a replacement key made. But, you'll need to present a valid photo ID and proof of ownership before the dealer is able to issue a new key. They'll also need to connect the new chip with your vehicle, which can take a few days.
One last thing to remember is that certain keys require coding in order to work with your vehicle. If your key broke while you were trying to start or open your car then you'll need to bring it back to the dealer in order to be coded.
In general, the cost to have a key replaced varies by make, but it is typically in the range of $100 to $200. It is easy and affordable for most people to visit their car dealer. If you have a high-end or specialty vehicle, it might be better to visit the manufacturer's dealer instead. In these instances, you will likely need to have your car towed to the dealer and prove ownership before they issue a replacement key. In some cases, the warranty may cover this.
Transponder Keys
Transponder keys are commonly found in vehicles manufactured within the last 20 years. A transponder chip is inserted inside the head of your car key, and when it's inserted into the ignition the antenna ring emits an explosion of radio frequency energy to the chip. The chip responds by creating an identification code. This code is transmitted to the vehicle's immobilizer and when the correct code is found, the engine will start.
If the correct code is not present the immobilizer will be disarmed and prevent the engine from beginning. Transponder keys help to prevent car theft by adding an additional layer of security. It's also important to have your keys replaced by a locksmith with worked with anti-theft systems of different automobile manufacturers.
Many people believe that their dealer is the only place where they can purchase a transponder key. Although the dealer has the equipment required, an experienced locksmith can make the transponder for a cheaper price and offer more convenience.
Beishir Lock and Security offers a variety of transponder key options for a variety of vehicles. If you have a standard transponder key, remote flip key or a FOBIK chip, we can replace and program it for you. We can even create keys for your vehicle from scratch, if required.
It's important to note that if your vehicle is currently operating with a non-transponder key it is not possible to upgrade to a transponder key as the immobilizer built into the car does not permit it. If you're worried about your car getting stolen, it's recommended you purchase the transponder.
It's crucial to choose the best lock for your car for security. Locksmiths can assist you with any lock but if you're looking for an extra level of protection then it might be worthwhile to invest in a transponder key to protect your car from being stolen.
Remote Fobs
Many cars have remotes that allow drivers to open trunks, doors, and tailgates. Some remotes even allow you to start the vehicle. These small wireless devices communicate with the vehicle through radio signals and operate under the power of batteries. But if the fob's battery dies, it can render the device useless.
A chirp usually indicates that the key fob battery is in need of replacement, and the majority of these remotes are small and have cases that are easy to open. Once you have opened the case, you will require a replacement battery. The majority of these batteries are available in auto parts stores and some supermarkets.
Reassembling the key fob is essential after replacing the battery. To avoid damaging the shell, open the fob's cover open in several places using a flat-blade screwdriver. Then, put the fob back together and test its buttons. It's done if everything is in order!
If the fob is still not working, the problem could be more serious than just an issue with the battery. It could have lost its programming and need to be repaired by a locksmith or dealer.
The majority of fobs have buttons to reset the reprogramming. The process is usually quick however, it will depend on the vehicle model and make. The key fob has to be "programmed" again to send its digital identification code to the car's onboard computer. This procedure is different for each model and year. It typically involves holding buttons or levers while engaging the power.
Some retailers, including some locksmiths and auto parts stores can program fobs from aftermarket stores bought on the internet. Yu from CR warns, however, that these products are difficult to repair and may not perform as expected. If you opt to purchase remote keys from a third party vendor, be sure that the seller is reputable and read the fine print to determine whether the fob is required to be programmed by a dealer. Some retailers, such as some Audi dealerships, require you to visit the dealer to get an external fob programmed.
