The Benefits and Side Effects of Coffee Beans
Coffee beans are loaded with health benefits. They can enhance cognitive function and reduce the risk of heart disease. However, consuming too many beans can cause adverse effects, such as anxiety and sleep disorders.
The flavor of a coffee may vary depending on the terrain, elevation and cultivation techniques. The type of plant used can also affect the taste.
Origin
The seeds of the tropical evergreen plant that produces coffee beans are referred to as coffee beans. The beans are roasted then ground to create the most loved coffee drink around the globe. Coffee is the third most loved drink globally and one of the most profitable international commodities. The caffeine alkaloid is the reason for the invigorating effects of coffee.
The most widely-respected origin story for coffee is that of an Abyssinian goat herder named Kaldi. good quality coffee beans noticed his animals were more energetic after eating berries of certain plants. The berries he ate proved to be energetic and started cultivating the plant.
In the 16th century, coffee began to travel eastwards to the Arabian Peninsula, where it was grown in the Yemeni region. The first coffee houses were established. These meeting places were diametrically from the taverns in Europe and focused on high-speed conversations and fast-paced thinking.
Today most of the world's coffee production is derived from two kinds of plants called Arabica and Robusta. They thrive in the Bean Belt region which is a strip of land that lies between the Tropic of Cancer & Capricorn.
Types
There are a variety of coffee beans, and each type has its own distinct flavor profile. The regions in which the beans are grown have a significant impact on their flavors. For example, Ethiopian coffee is known for its citrus and floral notes, while Colombian beans are full-bodied, and have a balanced acidity.
The coffee beans are gathered in a variety of ways and are refined to enhance their flavor. Some beans are dried, roasted and then ground. Others are frozen and ground at a later time. They may also be polished to remove the silver skin that covers the bean, a process called depulping. The beans are then sorted and graded by weight and size and any imperfections are eliminated either manually or using a machine.
Robusta plants are more resistant to pests and can grow at lower altitudes than Arabica plants. They also contain more caffeine than Arabica beans, and are mostly used in instant coffees or blends. However increasing numbers of people are enjoying the distinctive flavor and high quality of single origin coffees.
Flavor
Coffee beans can be filled with a variety flavors that add a new dimension to drink, dessert and food recipes. The type of bean that is suitable for a particular recipe will depend on the flavor profile you want and the way in which the recipe will be executed.
The coffee bean is actually a seed containing minerals, proteins and lipids as well as pollysaccharides. The seeds are surrounded by silverskin, which is removed during the roasting process. When the seeds are heated, they start the process of forming a chain reaction that create their aroma, flavor and color.
Natural coffee flavors are favored by purists. However, it's also possible to enhance the flavor of roasted coffee beans using manufactured flavors. To enhance the flavor of a batch of beans roasters spray the beans with flavored oil. The oil flavored with flavor will be mixed into the beans to ensure it is evenly distributed. The beans are then chilled and ground prior to packaging. The flavored beans can be made into a cup of coffee or eaten as snacks.
Health benefits
Coffee beans are a source of caffeine, a potent stimulant that can boost mood and boost energy levels. They also contain phenolic compounds which are antioxidants, and protect cells from injury. These compounds have been linked to a decreased risk of developing heart cancer and heart disease according to the National Institutes of Health.
The seeds of a coffee plant are found inside the fruit, which resembles cherries. Generally, the fruit contains two seeds, laid with a flat surface. Certain fruits only contain one seed. These are called peaberries. Peaberries make a weaker, less tasty cup.
Roasting coffee beans alters the taste of the beans making them more pleasant to the palate. Roasting coffee beans makes them easier to digest by the body.
Coffee beans contain phenolic substances that inhibit glucose formation in the liver and lower cholesterol levels. They are also thought to decrease the likelihood of developing non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and cirrhosis, and could even lower the risk of gallstones. Coffee beans are a rich source of potassium, riboflavin and B vitamins, and are also rich in fiber.
Side effects
The seeds of the coffee plant are usually ground and brewed into a popular beverage. The consumption of coffee is associated with a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes and liver diseases. However, the caffeine found in coffee that is brewed can cause adverse effects such as jitters, high blood pressure, and heartburn for certain people. Green coffee bean extract, a caffeine-free alternative has been proven to have some of similar benefits without the negative effects associated with caffeine.
Coffee beans contain a variety of nonvolatile and volatile chemicals that shield them from oxidation, insects, and diseases. These chemicals also enhance their flavor. Nonvolatile compounds create a wax-like coating on the surface of coffee beans. This coating helps to keep the beans hydrated and also prevents insects from eating them.
The fatty acids contained in coffee beans are converted to energy when the beans are cooked. This energy can improve mental performance. It also aids in the release of adrenaline, which is a hormone that prepares the body for physical activity. Additionally the chlorogenic acid found in green coffee beans may reduce fat absorption and slow down sugar release in the digestive tract.
