Liberica

Liberica coffee beans are an uncommon variety that is rarely used in the world. They make up less than 2 percent of the world's total consumption of coffee beans, and are often overlooked because they do not contain as much caffeine. These beans have a distinct flavor that a lot of coffee drinkers find irresistible.

Despite their rarity, Liberica coffee beans are still very popular in many parts of Asia. These beans are most common in Malaysia and Indonesia where there is a significant Muslim community. The coffee industry in these countries has always been extremely strong and drinking an espresso following a prayer is part of the tradition.

The history of Liberica coffee dates back to the 1890s when a global outbreak of coffee leaf rust destroyed most of the world's arabica crop. This caused coffee producers to discover a more resilient species that could thrive in tropical climates, and they soon discovered the Liberica plant.

Excelsa

While it's not usual for coffee lovers to come across excelsa beans in their cups, these more rare beans are gaining a reputation for their unique flavor. According to Komal Sable, a fifth generation coffee farmer at South India Coffee Co. They are "a variant of the liberica species and have a similar teardrop shape but smaller size." However, despite this family resemblance it is important to remember that excelsa is technically not a distinct species.
