The History Of Coffee Bean Shop
Five Brooklyn Coffee Bean Shops

If you're a coffee enthusiast, you should visit a coffee shop. These shops sell a range of whole beans from around the world. They also sell exclusive trinkets, kitchenware and other things.

Some of these shops offer subscriptions to their coffee beans. Others sell coffee beans in bulk at their retail stores.

Porto Rico Importing Co.

Veteran coffee vendor who is a specialist in international brews, loose teas, and a wide selection.

When you step into this old-school West Village shop, the aroma of freshly roasted beans fills your nose. Open bags of dark-brown beans line the shelves alongside sugar jars as well as coffee-making equipment and tea accessories.

Porto Rico, originally opened in 1907 by Italian immigrant Patsy Albonese. Greenwich Village at the time was witnessing an influx of Italian immigrants, who set up businesses in order to meet their dietary needs. Albanese named her shop after the renowned Puerto Rican coffee she imported (and sold) - - a drink that was that was so well-known at the time that even the Pope took a sip.

Porto Rico offers 130 different varieties of beans, which includes those from around the globe in three locations, including Bleecker Street, Essex Market, and online. The company roasts its own beans and offers wholesale distribution to 350 restaurants in NYC and Brooklyn.

Peter Longo, current owner and president, was raised in the family bakery on Bleecker Street, where his father was the owner of Porto Rico. He continues to run the shop in the same manner as his father and grandfather.

Sey Coffee

Sey Coffee, a coffee roaster and shop is located on Grattan Street, in Morgantown. The neighborhood, which is part of Brooklyn's Bushwick district is situated on Grattan Street. Co-founders Tobin Polk and Lance Schnorenberg, both 33 began roasting in a fourth-floor loft around the corner from their new store in 2011 under the name Lofted Coffee (with local clients including Greenpoint's Budin and Soho cart service Peddler).

Sey's emphasis on buying micro-lots--or even whole harvests from single farmers--has been praised by knowledgeable New York City coffee aficionados. In 2011, Sey purchased a six-bag micro lot of Danilo Dones Sitio Catucai from Brazil's Espirito Santo region. The beans were picked at their peak ripeness, floated to eliminate any defects and then dried fermented for about 36 hours before being dried on the farm. The result is a coffee that is a little berry and melon.

Sey's goal of holistically improving the health of staff, growers and customers extends beyond the store. It makes use of biodegradable plastics and composts, preventing waste from landfills and turning it into agents that lower harmful greenhouse gases and enrich the soil. It also prevents gratuities. This allows baristas to concentrate on their craft and to earn a living.

La Cabra

La Cabra is a modern specialty coffee company founded in Aarhus, Denmark in 2012. The company started with a modest store and a dedicated staff. Their honest and innovative method of providing an exceptional coffee experience has earned them a loyal following not only in their own town, but worldwide.

La Carba follows a strict method to select their best beans. They scour hundreds of varieties every year in order to find those that best meet their standards. They roast them lightly, adjusting their desired flavor profile. This results in more clarity and a better taste.

The East Village store, which opened in the month of October last year, has been praised for its excellent pour overs as well as its baked goods, which are overseen by Jared Sexton. He previously worked at Bien Cuit, Dominique Ansel and other coffee establishments.

The shop utilizes the La Marzocco Modbar and the cups plates and bowls are designed by Wurtz ceramics, a father/son studio located in Horsens. In a recent Q&A with Atlanta Coffee Shops, General Manager Ian Walla reveals that La Cabra serves around 250 different types of coffees each year, and usually has seven or eight varieties available at any given time.

The Roasting Plant Coffee

The Roasting Plant, a multi-unit retailer of coffee, roasts and brews its coffee on the spot. Each cup is roasted and brewed according to your preferences in less than one second. It searches the world for the highest-quality specialty beans that are sourced directly to give customers the option of choice and quality.

Their onsite roaster is a fluid bed machine, which is different from traditional drum machines commonly found in UK coffee shops. The beans are blown into the heated box using high-speed air, which is circulated. This keeps the beans in suspension and ensures a consistent roasting rate.

I tried the Sumatran coffee and it was rich with smooth mouthfeel, dark chocolate from the fragrance was present and the coffee started to cool while you sipped delicate citrus flavours fruit were evident.

medium roast coffee beans roasted coffee will then be poured into the store's Eversys Super-Automatic Brewing Machines to be brewed according your preferences in under a minute. Customers can choose from a variety of single origins and a variety of blends.

Parlor Coffee

Parlor Coffee was founded in 2012 in a barbershop equipped with a single group espresso machine. It has since evolved to become a burgeoning roastery, and its beans are available in top cafes, restaurants, and home brewers all over the city. Parlor is committed to sourcing high-quality beans from across the globe each of which is a long, arduous journey before it reaches the roasters.

The owners, who are self-described as "passionate about coffee and believe that great coffee should be accessible to all," have created a environment that is simple and filled with chalkboards. There are compost bins and up-cycled products, and low-frills decor.

They roast and brew their own blends and single-origins (there were six on the menu when I was there) They also offer cuppings on Sundays, which are open to the public. Imagine it as the tasting room of a brewery. You can smell and taste the beans, from chocolatey to earthy (one was almost tomato-like!). They're off the beaten track and is worth a visit.
