How to Keep Your Coffee Beans Fresh
Like a banana that is left on the counter coffee beans are prone to going bad. This is due to oxidation and loss of volatile soluble flavor compounds.
You can keep the fresh roast taste for a few weeks by following some simple guidelines. Heat, humidity and air are your beans' worst enemies!
How do you keep coffee beans in storage
It's no secret, coffee beans are degraded quickly. To ensure the best flavor from your beans, you need to store them in a proper manner. Despite this, many are unsure of the best to store their beans. Some people think that they can just put their beans in the refrigerator. This is not the best method.
The key is to keep your beans in an airtight, transparent container at room temperatures. This will shield your beans from two of their greatest enemies: air and moisture. Moisture and air can both ruin the beans' fresh-roasted taste, while moisture can also weaken them. The heat can also destroy the aroma and flavor of the beans, and light (especially sunlight) can take away their natural shine, too.
It's not a wise idea to keep coffee beans in the refrigerator. They could absorb the flavors and odors of other food items that are stored in the refrigerator like cheese and onions which can negatively affect the flavor of your coffee. They could also be exposed to condensation and moisture from the frig's cold air.
It is possible to store your beans in the original container or in a resealable plastic bag. Be sure to remove all the air prior to sealing the bag again, and keep it in a cool, dark area. This will help the beans to last longer, but it is best to use them within 72 hours of roasting.
Storing coffee beans in the Fridge
Many people keep their coffee beans in their refrigerators but this isn't necessarily a great idea. Coffee beans stored in a refrigerator absorb odors from food and water, which will negatively impact their flavor. coffee beans bristol to keep your coffee in is the dark cabinet, with an airtight, transparent container.
If your beans don't come in a coffee bag with a single-way valve, you'll have to move them into an container that is sealed and opaque, such as the Coffee Gator canister. The fridge can also be too cold for the coffee, which may affect its taste.
The main enemies of coffee beans are heat, air and moisture. To ensure freshness of the coffee beans, you should store your beans in an airtight opaque (not transparent) container at room temperature. The best place to keep them is a cool, dark pantry, but an armoire or cabinet can also be used. The storage of coffee in the fridge will extend its shelf life, however it's not recommended. It can affect the flavors of your beverage and cause them to deteriorate faster due to its cold temperature. In addition, the moisture and food smells in the fridge can also damage your beans.
Coffee beans are stored in the Pantry
Once the seal has been broken on your beans, it's best to store them in a dark place at room temperature in an airtight container. This will preserve the flavor, aroma, and freshness of your coffee for a long period of time (depending on how much oxygen, heat, or moisture is absorbed by the beans). Storing your beans in a cabinet close to an oven or kitchen counters that are exposed to direct sunlight isn't the ideal option because these areas can be extremely hot and accelerate the process of oxidation.
Moisture is one of the main reasons since beans are able to absorb moisture from the air, and this can reduce their natural flavors. Oxidation can also be accelerated by heat as the bean has the ability to degrade the molecular structures that give them their flavors and aromas. Also, heat strips the bean of their natural oils, which makes them taste less.
If you can keep your beans in their sealed, resealable bag that they came from or an equivalent airtight opaque container then their freshness will last around a week or so before they begin to degrade. They will last longer if you put them in the freezer, however you should be aware because the beans might suffer from freezer burn and they can also absorb odors from food that are floating around in the freezer them.
Storing coffee beans in the freezer
If you're spending 20 dollars or more on bags of premium coffee beans, it is important to know the best way to store them. Coffee absorbs moisture, aromas and flavors, so placing it in an opaque airtight container in a cool, dark area will help preserve the flavor. You can also freeze your beans but be careful when doing this it's best to move them into a Ziploc bag prior to freezing in order to avoid burning in the freezer.
Although freezing isn't a good idea, it can help if you have a limited amount of time or you're traveling and want to bring along your favorite roast. However, coffee beans that have been frozen aren't as fresh and will have a more bland flavor than beans that are properly stored in the fridge or pantry.
As you can see, it's recommended to use your beans lickety-splitt but sometimes we aren't able to afford that. If you store your coffee beans in a dark, cold container that is airtight and opaque container their shelf life can be extended by as much as 3 times. You may be surprised by how much better the coffee will taste as compared to beans that have been rotten in the freezer or fridge.
