The Hidden Secrets Of Coffee Beans Fresh
How to Keep Your Coffee Beans Fresh

Like a banana left on the counter coffee beans can turn bad. This is due to oxidation and loss of volatile soluble flavor compounds.

You can preserve the fresh roast flavor for a couple of weeks by following some simple tips. Your beans' greatest enemies are moisture, air and heat!

How to Store Coffee Beans

It's no secret that coffee beans degrade quickly. To enjoy the best flavor of your beans, it's important to store them properly. Despite this, many are confused as to how best to go about it. Some think they can just put their beans in the refrigerator, but this isn't actually the best way to do it.

Keep your beans at room temperature in an opaque, airtight container. This will shield your beans from two of their greatest enemies: moisture and air. Air and moisture can ruin the beans' fresh-roasted taste, while the moisture can make them less flavorful. Heat will also break down the aroma and flavor of the beans, and light (especially sunlight) can destroy their natural shine, too.

In fact, keeping coffee beans in a refrigerator could be more harmful than useful. They could absorb the flavors and odors from other foods in the refrigerator, like onions and cheese which can negatively affect the flavor of your coffee. They are also exposed to cold air from the refrigerator to condensation and moisture.

Instead, consider storing your beans in the container they came in or in a bag that can be resealable. Be sure to blow out all the air prior to sealing the bag again, and store it in cool, dark location. This can help the beans last a bit longer, however the best time to use them is within 72 hours after they have been roasted.

Storing Coffee Beans in the Fridge

Many people store their coffee beans in the refrigerator however this isn't a great idea. Coffee beans in the fridge absorb odors and moisture from food items which can adversely affect their flavor. The best place to store your coffee is in a dark cabinet, sealed with an airtight, transparent container.

If your beans aren't in a coffee bag equipped with an open valve, you'll have to put them in a container that is tightly sealed and opaque, such as the Coffee Gator canister. The fridge can also be too cold for the coffee, which can alter the taste of the coffee.

Air, heat and moisture are the main enemies of coffee bean. To preserve the freshness of their roast, you should store your beans in an airtight, opaque (not transparent) container at room temperature. A dark, cool, dark pantry is a great location to store them however, a closet or cupboard can also work. It is not recommended to store coffee in the refrigerator. It can extend its shelf-life, however you might want to consider it. The cold temperature can alter the taste of your coffee and cause it to go through a stale-like process faster. The smells of food and the moisture in the fridge can cause damage to your coffee beans.

Storing Coffee Beans in the Pantry

After the seal of the packaging has been broken on the beans, it's best to store them in a dark place at room temperature in an airtight container. This will preserve the aroma, flavor and freshness of the coffee for a while (depending on the extent of exposure to heat, oxygen and moisture). Storing your coffee beans in a cabinet next to an oven or kitchen counters that are exposed to direct sunlight isn't the best option because these areas can be extremely hot and accelerate the process of oxidation.

Moisture is a major factor because beans absorb moisture from the air and this can reduce their natural flavors. It can also accelerate oxidation because the bean can destroy the molecular structure that provides them with their distinctive aromas. Also, heat strips the bean of their natural oils which makes them taste less.

If you can keep your beans in the resealable, one-way valve bag that they came in, or an equivalent airtight opaque container then the freshness will last approximately a week before they begin to deteriorate. You can store them longer in the fridge, but be cautious as they could be prone to freezer burn or absorb any odors of food in the fridge.

Storing coffee beans in the freezer

If you're spending 20 bucks or more to purchase a haute bag of coffee beans, you need to be aware of the length of time they'll last and what the best ways are to store them. Coffee absorbs moisture, aromas and flavors therefore keeping it in an opaque airtight container in a cool, dark location will help preserve the flavor. You can also freeze your beans, but be careful if you decide to do this, make sure to move them into a Ziploc bag before freezing to avoid freezing burn.

While freezing isn't a good idea but it is a good option when you're short on time or traveling and want to take some of your favorite coffee with you. Frozen coffee beans are not as fresh and have a less pronounced flavor than beans that are stored in the refrigerator or pantry.

It is recommended to use the beans as quickly as you can however, we may not always have that luxury. If bulk buy coffee beans keep your coffee beans in a dark, cold space in a dark, airtight container, their shelf life can be extended up to 3 times. Give it a try (be sure to follow the above instructions carefully) you might be amazed by how much better the coffee will taste as compared to the dull and uninteresting beans that went bad in the fridge or freezer.
