Types of Coffee Beans
Behind every cup of coffee we drink there are beans that have been carefully graded. These beans are examined according to their size and shape, color, shape and density.
The AA grade is assigned to coffee beans that satisfy all of the above requirements, except they cannot contain more than three deficient qualities (quakers). Most often, these are Kenya AA beans.
Arabica
Arabica coffee beans are also known as Coffea Arabicica and are the most sought-after coffee beans in the world. The legend says that coffee was first discovered in Ethiopia when a goat herder noticed his herd dancing with more energy after eating the fruits of the coffee plant. This inspired him to experiment with roasting seeds and brewing the coffee, resulting in the drink that we drink today.
While a myriad of coffee plants are available, there are only two species that are used as the basis for our favorite coffees: robusta and arabica. The former is generally considered superior to the latter, and this is evident in the flavor of the final drink.
There are a number of different arabica cultivars, with each one possessing its own unique flavor profile. Two of the most famous varieties are Typica and Bourbon and from which all other arabica varieties have been created, either through natural mutations or through deliberate crossbreeding. The SL28 cultivar, for instance was created in Kenya by Scott Labs and is known for its distinctive chocolate taste.
The taste of an arabica variety is based on the conditions under the conditions it was cultivated, and also how it was handled and cooked. The shade a tree receives can have a significant impact on the final product.
Robusta
Robusta coffee beans (Coffea canephora) are the second most sought-after variety of coffee. They are the beans used to make the majority of instant drinks and have twice the amount of caffeine as Arabica Coffee Beans. They are also used in a variety of espresso blends, particularly for cappuccino and caffe latte.
The Coffea Canephora plant was initially discovered in Sub-Saharan Africa, but it has since been cultivated all over the globe. It can grow at lower altitudes and is able to withstand higher temperatures than the Arabica coffee plant, making it a more suitable crop for farmers. Vietnam is the world's largest producer of robusta, followed by Brazil and Indonesia.
Although the robusta plant has its benefits However, it's not adored by cupping enthusiasts for its bitter taste and burnt rubber notes. It's often regarded as to be a lower quality coffee and the majority of large coffee companies employ arabica beans for their top-quality products.

Liberica
Liberica coffee beans are a rare variety that are not often used in the world. They make up less than 2% of world's coffee consumption, and are often overlooked since they don't have the same amount of caffeine as Arabica and Robusta do. However, they do have distinctive flavor that many coffee lovers find irresistible.
Liberica coffee beans, though extremely scarce however, are quite popular in certain parts of Asia. The most common place for these beans is in Malaysia and Indonesia where there is a large Muslim community. Liberica coffee's roots go back to the 1890s which was the time when a global epidemic caused by coffee leaf rust caused a massive loss of the arabica crop. This caused coffee makers to search for a more resilient species that could thrive in tropical climates, and they quickly discovered the Liberica plant.
Liberica plants are resistant to diseases and pests which makes them the perfect alternative to the ruined arabica crop. Liberica can also grow in lower altitudes and high temperatures which allows it to thrive in the Southeast Asian climate. This is why, today the majority of coffee that is produced in the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia is made from Liberica beans.
Excelsa
While it isn't common for coffee enthusiasts to find excelsa beans, they are now gaining the reputation of having a distinctive flavor. According to Komal Sable, a fifth generation coffee farmer at South India Coffee Co. These beans are "a variant of the liberica species and have the same teardrop shape, however, they are smaller." However despite this resemblance to the family it's important to know that excelsa is technically not a distinct species.
As such, it's a little ambiguous as to how excelsa beans should be classified, and it's this confusion that has been at the root of the beans' absence in the modern world of coffee. Many roasters, growers, and brewers are unaware of how to properly cultivate and utilize these beans.
It is ultimately up to each person to decide if they enjoy the taste of excelsa. it may take some time to find the perfect blend. The key is to be open-minded and give each type of coffee a try until you find one that you really enjoy. You'll be able to explore the wide range of options these unique beans can offer. It's a journey that's well worth the journey.
