12 Facts About Types Of Coffee Beans That Will Make You Look Smart Around The Cooler. Cooler
Types of Coffee Beans

Behind every cup of coffee we sip there are carefully graded beans. These beans are evaluated based on their size and shape, color, shape and density.

The AA grade is awarded to coffee beans that meet all of the above criteria, but they must not contain more than three deficient qualities (quakers). Most often, these are Kenya AA beans.

Arabica

Arabica coffee beans, also known as Coffea arabica are the most coveted kind of coffee beans in the world. The legend says that coffee was discovered in Ethiopia when goat herders noticed their herd swaying with more energy after eating the fruits of the coffee plant. This prompted him to try roasting the seeds before brewing them, creating the drink that we enjoy today.

There are a myriad of varieties of coffee plants, but only two are used to create our favorite brews - arabica and robusta. The taste of the final beverage is typically more appealing with the first.

There are a variety of arabica cultivars. Each has its own unique taste profile. Typica and Bourbon are two of the most well-known arabica cultivars. All other arabica cultivars were derived from these two varieties, either through natural mutations or intentional crossbreeding. The SL28 cultivar, for instance was developed in Kenya by Scott Labs and is known for its distinctive chocolatey flavour.

The flavour of a given arabica variety will depend on the conditions under which it is cultivated, and also on how it is handled and roasted. The shade the tree gets will have a major impact on the final product.

Robusta

Robusta coffee beans (Coffea canephora) are the second most popular type of coffee beans. These beans are utilized in the majority of instant coffees. They also contain twice the amount of caffeine as Arabica Coffee Beans. They are also used in the making of many espresso blends including cappuccino, caffe latte, and other beverages that are coffee-based.

The Coffea Canephora plant originated in Sub-Saharan Africa, but it has since been cultivated around the world. It can grow at lower elevations and can withstand higher temperatures than Arabica coffee plants, making it more suitable for farmers. Vietnam is currently the largest producer of robusta coffee followed by Brazil and Indonesia.

Although the robusta plant has its merits, it's not as well-loved by cupping enthusiasts due to its bitter taste and burnt rubber notes. It's often regarded as an inferior coffee and a majority of the major coffee companies make use of arabica beans to create premium products.

However, the demand for gourmet coffee is growing and small roasters are exploring high-end robusta varieties to profit from its superior qualities. Our Valhalla Java coffee and Death With Coffee coffee are two examples. Both are exceptional robustas that are blended with arabica for the perfect balance of quality and flavor. These beans are from Uganda, a country where robusta has been grown for a long time. You can read more about them here.

Liberica

Liberica coffee beans are scarce and are not used in the world. They account for less than 2% of global coffee consumption and are often overlooked due to the fact that they don't contain the same amount of caffeine as Arabica and Robusta do. These beans have a unique flavor that a lot of coffee drinkers find appealing.

Liberica coffee beans, though extremely scarce however, are quite popular in certain parts of Asia. These beans are most common in Malaysia and Indonesia where there is a large Muslim community. The coffee industry in these countries has historically been very strong and drinking coffee after prayer is a part the tradition.

Liberica coffee's roots go back to the 1890s after a worldwide epidemic caused by rust on the coffee leaf destroyed the arabica crop. This event spurred coffee makers to search for an alternative species that could thrive in tropical climates, and they quickly discovered the Liberica plant.

cafe coffee beans have a high tolerance for pests and diseases, which made the perfect substitute for the ruined arabica crop. Liberica also has the ability to thrive in hot temperatures and lower altitudes, which enabled it to flourish in the climate of Southeast Asia. This is why, in the present the majority of the coffee grown in the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia originates from Liberica beans.

Excelsa

Although it's not common for coffee lovers to come across excelsa beans, they are beginning to gain a reputation for having a distinct flavor. According to Komal Sable of South India Coffee Co. who is a fifth generation farmer of coffee, these beans have a similar teardrop form, but are smaller. It is important to note that despite the close resemblance between excelsa and liberica the species isn't an individual one.

It's unclear how to classify excelsa beans. This confusion is responsible for the lack of their presence in the current coffee industry. Many roasters, growers, and brewers are unaware of how to properly cultivate and use these beans.

It is ultimately the individual's responsibility to decide if they like the flavor of excelsa. it might take some time to find the right blend. The key is to be open-minded and give each type of coffee a try until you find one that you truly love. You'll get to explore the full range of possibilities the unique beans have to offer. It's an experience that's worth the ride.
